A colleague of mine said that his relative thought that there was a journalism award called a “bullet surprise”.
I’ve heard “pullet surprise” as another verbal mondegreen for that. And, in fact, “Pullet Surprise” was a 1997 Looney Tunes short, featuring Foghorn Leghorn. ![]()
One of my aunts announced to the family that she had a “hyena hernia.”
Just last week the bartender said someone had hit her car and dented the corner panel. She said this maybe half a dozen times clearly.
Also, I once worked with a guy who said wheel barrel. Clearly he had never seen the word wheelbarrow in writing.
That’s great!
I’ve told this one before here. I was on a riverboat ride in New Orleans when I heard a good ol’ gal say to her friend, “this is great, they have one of those steam-powered kaleidoscopes and everything.”
I’ve messed up the soup or salad question as well and asked what was in it. “In what?” “The super salad.”
Everyone I’ve ever heard say that has gotten it (as a lifelong earworm) by listening to Tracie from Michigan tell them about how tough her day was…

Like the eskimos and snow, people in Seattle have a hundred words for umbrella… My brother has a new one. From October to March, he always takes his Bumpershoot.
And takes it to their fall arts festival. Also called Bumpershoot (according to the bro, no matter how many times he’s corrected).
When I was a kid I overheard a news report talking in serious tones about euthanasia. My immediate though was, “What’s the problem with youth in Asia?”
My wife was a high school English teacher. One day the homework assignment was to write an essay describing the student’s room. Several kids mentioned the chester draws. The next day she walked into the classroom and wrote chest of drawers on the blackboard. There was a chorus of “Oh.”

“What’s all this I keep hearing about flea erections in China?”

For all intensive purposes
Lots of people I work with think they get french benefits.
Is chest of drawers a regionalism? I think I’ve heard it on “This Old house” but it’s always been a dresser to me.
