And who would argue against the Paquadorian national anthem?
I cherish a fond but vain hope that my country will finally relinquish Anacreon to his eternal rest, and replace “The Star-Spangled Banner” with that most lovely of American patriotic songs, “America The Beautiful”.
I can neither deny nor confirm this. But if I did, I’d have to shoot you.
I once sang that for some Brits with whom the topic had somehow come up. They laughed uncontrollably and said it was a sappy song girl scouts would probably sing around a campfire.
What could I do? I agreed wholeheartedly with them.
Never heard that version before–sounds pretty cool to me. (It’s not in a minor key, though. Not sure if you were saying it is or not.)
Then you, sir, are no true Scotsman.
I refer to the UK national anthem - which I loathe - as “One entity I don’t believe in, save another entity I don’t believe in”.
What prompted this thread was my annoyance at ‘patriots’ who stand, cheer, defend the US national anthem but don’t know there are 3 other verses that never get played or sang. Also, I think it is a horrible song, not appropriate- it was written when there were 18 states, and that a much better anthem would be America The Beautiful. I also realize that changing the anthem would go over like electing a black, female, lesbian, atheist with a lisp for president.
Sung.
I like the Chinese anthem, which has a rather jaunty air to it: China (2012 / 2016) (Olympic Version / Versión Olímpica) - YouTube
And here’s the anthem of the United Federation of Planets, first performed on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: United Federation of Planets / Federación Unida de Planetas (*Fictitious state/Estado ficticio) - YouTube
Actually, they don’t. They line up for Ireland’s Call, that was specifically commissioned to be played instead of either the British or Irish national anthems, apart from international matches in the Republic when both Ireland’s Call and the Irish national anthem are played.
And here it is being sung: Passionate Ireland's Call Anthem - YouTube
For those with memories stretching back to Goon Shows will recall the episode “The Sleeping Prince” which featured the National Anthem of the Pacific Republic of Yukkabukkoo. (Milligan’s Symphony no 1 in G). .
New Zealand has a nice anthem (God Defend New Zealand) which is particularly poignant as, not having a army, navy or air force, God is their first line of national defence, hence the necessity of following it with the haka.
Technically, New Zealand has two national anthems - God Save The Queen is the other one.
What’s interesting is God Defend New Zealand now often seems to be sung in English and Maori; when I was in school only the English version was sung.
This question is becoming a hot issue in an increasingly nationalistic atmosphere in India
Let’s not forget the national anthem of Molvania
I always liked the version in which the classic funeral march is set to the words “God Loves New Zealand, He gave us boiling mud”. (A little tiresome here, but you get the idea).
