What the heck?? At the welcome back party, Carmelo Anthony, when asked whether he was going to stay ay SU, said “I thought college was 4 years” - which I take it means he was going to stay.
And now he’s decided to go pro?! I mean, jeez, do you think he’s going to be anything special in the NBA? He’ll probably get stuck on some little crap team and disappear… He’s got 40,000 Syracuse Orangemen fans cheering for him at SU! Why the heck did he change his mind???
They always say stuff like that. They try to imply they are coming back, but never actually say it. He didn’t lie afterall college is four years. Or they will say I’ve still got work to do. Or I still need to improve my shooting or whatever. Or I’m really happy where I’m at right now. When it comes down to it though the big payday is hard to pass-up. I can honestly say if I was given the same choice he was I would bolt for the NBA in a second unless I was independantly wealthy already which few people actually are.
He’s going to be the third pick in the NBA draft, he’s won a national championship, what more does he have to prove? The third pick makes 3 million his rookie year in the NBA… why stick around?
I dunno. To me it’s always the big fish/small pond issue, and I don’t understand why no one ever chooses to stick around for one more year. I mean, especially as a freshman – he won Final Four MVP or whatever they call it, imagine how dominant he could be next year? And it’s not like the NBA would pay him less if he played in school for one more year.
I was surprised too though. He seemed so earnest with that ‘college is 4 years’ thing. And that was the first thing I thought of when I heard the announcement today, too.
It’s great that he’s going into the draft hehe, being from Toronto and all he’s our projected pick, and that pick aint that bad.
for all the double talk he used, well what do you expect from athletes? they need to be able to keep their options wide. The world caters to their needs hehe.
There’s no reason for him to stay in college. He’s already won the national championship, his game is ready for the pros, and he’s one of the top picks. He’d be a fool to stick around. Even if he is serious about wanting to get a degree, which is unlikely, he can do on the side while making millions a year. All of his ducks are lined up, time to shoot.
Look at it this way: (1), everyone will once again overlook Syracuse next year like they did this past year. They will be underestimated, which will work greatly in their favor. (2) The pressure is all off. No one will expect anything from them since Carmelo is gone.
I do not envy the team that wins the NBA Draft lottery. That team will have to pick Lebron James, or else the fans will burn down the arena. But while Lebron could one day be incredible, he is going to suck for at least one season of NBA ball, maybe more. C’mon, who has he played against his whole life? Overmatched high school kids. He’s a VERY raw talent. But because of his massive potential, he’s got to go #1.
But Carmelo is a much more developed talent right now. He’s someone who could have an impact right away. He probably won’t go number one since Lebron was hyped for so much longer, even though right now Carmelo has to be the better player.
Welcome to the world of college athletics. Except for Tim Duncan, people never stay. And Carmelo would be a fool to stay in school. His basketball career will only last so long, and every year he plays for free is one less year he’ll be able to play for money. You can never fault someone for leaving school if they are going to be a lottery pick, much less the #3 pick overall.
If you have a chance to make that kind of money, you would be absolutely insane not to take it. He can always go back to school to get a degree, but he can’t always have a basketball career.
Getting a degree can happen anytime, but an athlete’s career is always one injury away from being over. All it takes is one stress fracture, one back injury, and all that money he could make is history. Once you’re 18 years old, the clock’s ticking. If he enters the draft now he could set himself and his family up to attend Harvard every year for the rest of their lives. Take the money now, I says.
The way I rationalize it is next year, had he stayed, he’d be walking around with a huge ego, receiving hero status where ever he went. Now granted, I’m nearly 20 years off the hill, but still, who needs that (paging Pearl Washington!)?
So now, SU has finally won the big one. Warrick is still a pogo stick. Edelin and McNamara will continue to shine. Good incoming recruits. They’ll still be a great team next year.
