I remember that fire. I don’t remember any mention of a Northern Exposure connection.
I knew the guy who worked as JanineTurner’s bodyguard. Brit ex-military/Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels type.

I noted Maurice’s homophobia in an early episode where he gets all geeked out about Chris talking on the radio about Walt Whitman’s homosexuality. That likely wouldn’t play today. Neither would his bigotry (last night’s episode he was entertaining some Japanese businessmen and said a couple things that would cross the line in an Archie Bunker kinda way.
The character of Maurice as a whole would be as dated as Archie is now. Remember when he met Chris’s Black half brother and grilled him on AAVE? “How come you don’t say ‘I axed you a question?’” Urgh.
I’m actually watching the show for the first time now. I didn’t get the chance to watch it when it ran from 90-95.
Shame, really. I liked her in some of earlier acting roles. She holds her own in Cliffhanger, and she’s the McGuffin in a really wonderful Larry Cohen movie called The Ambulance.
Janine Turner had a bodyguard?? For what?
You’re right - I must be losing my mind.
Yes, but Maurice is a CHARACTER. He is not held up as a paragon of exemplary behavior. His CHARACTER is bigoted and homophobic. What do you mean, “That likely wouldn’t play today?” It would play very well in a story in which one of the characters is bigoted and homophobic. I’m okay with a show that has characters in it who hold and express views that I find obnoxious.
I mean it in much the same way that Archie Bunker wouldn’t play today. Norman Lear has said as much himself. Namely, we’ve largely moved past - oh look, it’s a character acting like a ridiculous bigot as being particularly funny this day and age.
Maurice was not played for laughs. Archie Bunker was a one-dimensional caricature. Maurice was a complex, multi-faceted character who possessed some qualities and beliefs that are (and were then) obnoxious and disgusting.
I watched the first two episodes at dialysis today.
I thought when Maurice talked on the radio about he figured out John Wayne wasn’t the hero he thought he was. And said he didn’t want people reading Walt Whitman for the wrong reasons.
I think it was a small epiphany for him.
I’ve never watched the whole series. I’m hoping Maurice grows into a better person in the series.
I’m losing hope reading this thread.
Don’t be deterred by the nitpicking in this discussion. Decide for yourself. It was an absolutely fantastic series.
With Graham Greene, who is fantastic.
Without spoiling anything, when Maurice finds love late in the series, that person is SO PERFECT for him. I would have liked to see a spinoff series about them.
I’ll keep watching just to see that. Thx.
Maurice’s SO is seen once or twice every season but they don’t really ramp it up till Season Six. Such fun, I love them!
I remember losing interest in the show around the time his character was added. But maybe it was just that I disliked Adam & Eve episodes.
Yeah, I thought they really dragged the show down for awhile.
I loved that show and thank the OP for alerting me to its availability. Definitely gonna go for it.
I thought Chris had kind of a David Foster Wallace vibe going - anyone else sense that?
Was that the Alaskan state trooper? Who got into a boxing match with Holling before the ice broke? I can’t believe how much of the show is coming back to me considering I haven’t seen it since it originally aired.
