Northern Exposure

This nearly perfect show (until the last season) isn’t streaming anywhere. Thankfully I had bought my wife the first 5 seasons on DVD a few years back.

So she popped in the Three Amigos episode S3.16 (Call of the Wild narration episode).

You know what? Northern Exposure at its best was as good as TV ever got.

Absolutely true! Fantastic show. I wish it were streaming somewhere.

Agreed. I loved it. Except for the whole cow flinging episode.

As a pianist, the substitution was just slightly less painful to me than the original plan.

During some of the time that show was produced, I worked at an office park in Redmond, Washington. Someone said that one of the other buildings there had been converted to a sound stage where they shot the interior scenes for Northern Exposure. I was never able to get absolute confirmation, but I saw enough things around the building to make me think it was true.

I’ve also been to Roslyn, where the exteriors were filmed.

Well, we’re gonna eat it.

Ah but …

It was a dead piano, I mean maybe it was pining for the fjords but it certainly looked dead.

Its dying groan haunts me.

I loved that show so danged much. I really need to pick up the DVDs.

Its dying groan haunts me.

It does seem that it may indeed return:

One of my top three favorite shows EVER. I have all seasons on DVD. I think the music from the original shows - some of it anyway - has substitutions. But this show is sheer MAGIC. I have so many favorite episodes, but Maurice’s elaborate dinner party where Shelly broke the billion dollar bottle of wine and Eve glued the broken bottle together and whipped up a similar tasting wine, and they served it none the wiser - priceless.

The show was f’ing magic. I do hope the long-promised followup series is a thing. They’ve been saying it’s been in the works for years.

The stubborn unhelpfulness and insubordination of the doctor’s receptionist always irritated the hell out of me. It was supposed to be funny, I guess, but I never found it so.

My grandmother and I watched every week. It was our favorite show of the time. I miss it nearly as much as I miss her and really need to find it on DVD.

Totally forgot about Northern Exposure! I’m going to have to buy the dvds.

I don’t think it was supposed to be actually funny, but just a part of her quirky unemotional personality.

Was here in Hawaii as a grad student during most of its run. I and the future Mrs. always watched it. It was a good introduction to American TV for her.

Man, that is such an awesome scene. The show was just amazing.

It is one of my all-time favorites, but I had a very busy life back when it first aired, so I got to see less than half of the shows. All six seasons are available from DVD/Netflix and about a year ago I put them all in my queue. It hasn’t aged the way a lot of shows do - I just started season 4 and have enjoyed every minute so far.

The cow-fling didn’t bother me at all - I was looking forward to seeing it and was disappointed when it didn’t happen. They were going to eat it

Poor piano.

I remember enjoying the show back in the day, but I thought it went downhill after Joel and Maggie slept together. A.k.a. “Moonlighting syndrome”.

I visited the town of Roslyn around the time it was on the air and visited all the local landmarks: The Brick, the radio station, the general store, Joel’s office, etc. a gift shop in town was selling pieces of The Piano as souvenirs along with “Cicely” merchandise.
