Everything seems to be just dandy. Firewall. No pop-ups, ad-blocker. Dum-dee-dum-dee-da.
Wait a minute…?! What the…?

Turning to Dopers for help:
What in the whole wide world is causing the software to screw up all sites where I fill out a form? I’ve set it to allow java and active-x. Everything works fine but when I go to a site and try to do a search, it responds with “object has been moved here.”
These are sites with drop down menues, where I first select some options, then go and when the new window is supposed to open, I get that error message, which is shown in the window of IE. However, going to where the object has been moved will not produce any results. I checked the source on the pages in question, and it is java.
Symantec doesn’t have anything on the support pages. Calling their support costs friggin $25.95 per call.
I’m not sure if any of this makes any sense at all.
This may not really be a Symantec issue. What version of windows are you running, and have you used the Windows “update” feature under the “tools” section of IE to get all the latest security patches ( and there are a ton of them) .
I have an earlier version of NIS and I’ve found a number of sites where Norton’s pop-up blocker trashes the site.
These sites are designed to open new windows when you use their navigation features or [submit] buttons. The problem is that NIS, or any other blocker, can’t tell the difference between a command to open a new window to display a pop-up ad and acommand to open a new window to go to page 2 of a form. So it blocks them both.
Workaround : Adjust NIS to permit popups within that particular site.
In the never-ending arms-race between us folks with adblockers and those folks with advertising-supported wesbites, it seems to me like they’re trying to design more and more websites so the functionality of the site and the advertising depend on the same browser features. That way you can’t get one without the other.
Webmasters may think they’re solving their free-rider problem this way, but for me it just means I go to the competition, usually after sending a polite form complaint to the webmaster@ address.
XP pro. And yes, I have all the latest patches and fixes, both for XP and NIS.
I hear what you say, LSLGuy, however, we’re not talking about a new window. It’s places like the ones where you first choose a country (say the US), and the next meny then changes and give the option to pick a state. Of course, should it be Canada or Germany, the second meny will not look the same, so there is some kind of script, which pick the right states/regions/whatevers depending on what country you’re from. Also, in my labor to fix this, I’ve allowed IE to do anything, whatsoever, and disabled ad-banning. The problem persists and can only be fixed by disabling NIS completely. Now, that’d be fine, since NAV still works, but even though I removed it from the registry, NIS still shows up automatically in the system tray.
You mentioned Java and ActiveX, but these dropdown forms are usually Javascript (make sure that’s enabled). I believe it’s possible to inexplicably turn off JavaScript accidentally with the right sequence of seemingly unrelated (I did it once. No idea how. I think changing pop-upsettings was part of it) You can either turn it on for the specific sites that misbehave, or change the default
I preferred it when they were HTML FORM INPUT/etc. tags, but I’m Olde Skoole
