Nostalgic American Beverages?

I totally agree with the “mmmmm”, but are you really unable to get your hands on Vernors? I know it’s regional but I thought it was widely available these days.

A couple retro ones I remember fondly:

Slice
Rondo

I’m sure most of you remember Slice, but I can never find anyone but myself who remembers Rondo. Their tagline was “Slam It Down!”.

mmm

How far from the NY metro area does Dr. Brown’s sodas get? They’re pretty common in Central Jersey and I don’t recall seeing them in Florida, New Orleans, Chicago or California. Anyone else familiar with them and not NY, NJ or Connecticut?

How about the (Chicagoland) Canfield Lineup?

50/50, which was excellent, but made from lime and grapefruit, which turns out to be much better than lemon-lime (YMMV).

Also…
Canfield’s Diet Chocolate Fudge
Canfield’s Dry Ginger Ale
Grandpa Graf’s
Swiss Creme

(I never saw Granpa Graf’s. Ginger Ale and Swiss Creme were very good, too.)

I remember Green River, Teem, Slice, Vernors. Remember Jolt?

I recently discovered a locally invented drink, made from pre-digested peanuts mixed with DNA.

I live about 5 minutes from the Green River in Auburn. The river does not go anywhere near Seatac.

It goes up into Kent, on the other side of I-5 from SeaTac (city). I doubt anyone out-of-area would have recognized the names Kent or Auburn.

I’ve seen it in sandwich shops here in Schenectady.

Lol! I lived near there for 4 years and still have a Caveman Kitchen pin.

Local bagel shop in Wisconsin carries the full line of Dr. Brown’s.

(So did the cute little Jewish deli that went under… that’s how I learned that no one should get celery flavoring anywhere near a soda.)

Grew up in Los Angeles county and I remember Cactus Cooler from back then. Whenever I’m in the area visiting family I’ll usually buy a bottle. Like others mentioned it’s got a pineapple-orange taste quite different from Mountain Dew. I don’t think anyone would confuse the two in a taste test.

I recently bought a bottle of Cel-Rey at Rocket Fizz, here in the Pacific Northwest. So, pretty far. I think I’ve seen it at more mainstream bottle shops, but I’m not positive.

I miss all the Nehi flavors, like peach.

I liked Cactus Cooler. Sorta kinda orange–pineapple flavored , but without the throat searing intensity of Nehi or Crush. It was different. I also liked Squirt.

It was sold in steel cans by the case or each IIRC. Stores that carried Canada dry carried it, like Sav-on drugs.

Bubble Up is another.

Can I remind everyone of this masterpiece?

Squirt is still around (I had that brand as a client, 20 years ago); it’s made by Dr Pepper Keurig, which also makes Canada Dry, so it makes sense that they were sold at the same stores.

Yes, but I have only tried the diet version once, it wasnt any good, i dont know if they still make it. Some people say that Fresca tastes like Squirt and they are woefully wrong. Mind you, one tiny benefit of fresca is that it freezes into a sort of slurry even in a soft drink machine if it it set cold enuf.

I stopped drinking most sugar sodas quite some time ago.

I miss the sodas which Snapple had before they switched to juices. I don’t remember trying their namesake but they had a great root beer!

A few years ago I was in Chicago in early December and I mentioned to a friend that I hadn’t had a Green River in ages. She picked up a couple of 2-liters for me; one I drank over the weekend and the other I packed in my checked bag to take home.

I’m imagining your digestive tract in the airport x-ray-type scanner, glowing bright green, setting off alarms.

I remember seeing them in Virginia in the '90s.

Bought that in Michigan in the '60s.

I often drank rum Bacardi 151 and Coke Jolt when I was in Hawai`i.

I love Squirt, but don’t drink non-diet sodas much.

Back in the late '70s Vernor’s was still only available in Michigan. I was in Iowa by then, but one of the ladies at work went to MI every summer to visit her grandchildren and brought me back a six-pack or two.

Archaic Canadian beverages include Sport Cola, New York Seltzer (occasionally re-released in limited flavours), Pop Shoppe, Tahiti Treat and PC Chocolate Soda.

You also can’t get Moxie - once the world’s best selling soda - here. Since it is so medicinal tasting, I’m okay with that. My brother stocks up on it when he goes to Maine, however. I think I’ve seen Jolt Cola here fairly recently.
