Not for individual sale

Whenever I go to one of these bulk warehouse places to shop for stuff some of the products are marked “not for individual sale”. If I by a 20 pack of Big Red and try to sell individual packs will the police come looking for me? Why aren’t the multi packs labeled like the individual packs. It ought to cost the same. Whats the deal?

The individual units do not have all of the nutritional info that is required. To add it might involve increasing the amount of packaging. To save money, the labeling is printed once on the larger package, and that savings is passed on to the consumer buying the multi-pack.

You can find a similar message on full-size catsup bottles in a restaurant. I don’t see how marking each item with the necessary info is really any harder than marking them “not for individual sale.”

It was once explained to me that it had to do with the manufacturer wanting to control how the product was distributed. WHY the manufacturer gives a rat’s butt about it, I could never understand.

Considering the low margins in the grocery business, it’s probably to prevent small stores from purchasing multi-packs at a discount from warehouse clubs or distributors and splitting them up and selling them individually.

In other words, the manufacturer makes more money this way.
