Not many people know that...

Man has landed on the moon six times and spent almost 300 hours on the moons surface (not all EVA). Yet woman has visited the moon less than once. Never. For 0 minutes. Woman has visited the moon less than once. Never. For zero minutes.

In all seriousness, you probably already knew that, but it was news to me- no woman in six missions up until 1976? Of course, were women even in the space program? OH, I get it, :smack: they weren’t in the space program yet, were they?

You’ll never believe what prompted me to look into it- there was a thread where I used the phrase ‘To the moon…’ as an homage to Ralph Kramden, and it got me thinking whether any woman really has been to the moon or not, and whether her name was Alice :D. And yeah, I know of the Futurama episode w/ the gag about future people thinking Ralph Kramden was the father of space travel w/ his moon line.

And I won’t be the only guy making that Alice joke if a female astronaut does end up landing eventually ;).

Please don’t take offense- I promise not to use the line ever again, b/c it’s outdated and offensive and such.

I have no idea who Ralph Kramden is. Or Alice for that matter. Or what either of them has to do with the moon.

What does EVA stand for?

“Extra-vehicular activity”; i.e., going outside of the spaceship. It can refer to either a moonwalk or a spacewalk (floating around outside the ship); or, someday, to walking around on Mars, etc.

The first woman to perform an EVA was Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya on July 25, 1984.

Ralph Cramden was a character played by Jackie Gleason in the old TV sitcom “The Honeymooners.” When he was irritated with his long-suffering wife, Alice, he’d say something like “One of these days, Alice, one of these days, you’re goin’ right to the moon!” accompanied by a broad gesture suggesting a roundhouse punch. This was supposed to be really funny. Of course, in true sitcom fashion, he never laid an actual hand on her, she almost always turned out to be completely right, and the episode ended with a lovey dovey hug.

Bump.

Glad to see my joke is being recognized … See, this is why someone needs to start a website w/ all the inside jokes on it, more thorough than Opalcat’s page is- so people read the required text.

Order the shows on DVD. You’ll be glad you did. THe Honeymooners.

Here’s a page all about the history of women in the space program.

They were in NASA by the 60s. Man, you guys- girls- should be PO’d about the whole moon thing. :stuck_out_tongue: You got ripped off. Let’s root for 2018!(that’s when we’re supp. returning to the moon according to article I link to; the crew will o.c. contain women astronauts).

I really like the way you set up your OP. Well done.
I did actually know that no woman had been on the moon yet.
Honeymooners are overrated and very dated. Sorry **Kalhoun **.
There were some very funny moments, (like the name that tune episode)
But most of it isn’t that funny.

Jim

I have to agree. Funny when it first broadcast, but very dated now.

“That’s one small step for a wom… Hey, wouldn’t a sofa be just lovely next to that crater”

I don’t think so. I’ve since spoken to my parents and I mentioned this show to them. They both remember it. They both agree that it wasn’t remotely funny.

Thanks, but the reason I did the OP the way I did was a joke on an old classic thread, link here, that became an inside joke (Once. In 1960. For 20 minutes. :D).

I think my mistake was thinking that people would remember the title of that old post, which they prob. didn’t- not quite as catchy as Are scalar weapons for real?

No I remember it, Trench and all. That was why I liked your OP. I was saying it was clever.
I was then saying very quickly that Iwas awre that no female human has stepped on the moon.

Jim

Leela: Wow. I had no idea the first astronauts were so fat.
Fry: He wasn’t an astronaut! He was just an actor who used space travel as a metaphor for beating his wife.

Ralph Kramden actually did hit his wife, Alice, once. For 20 minutes, in 1960.

That’s not a hit once, that’s a class A felony or what is known as doing a Sonny Corleone on her A$$.

Jim

Oops, my bad. I assumed wrong based on your join date. I guess newer Dopers like you and I don’t really remember old classics like that one, we go back and read it and then share in a collective experience of other members of these boards when we say we remember it. Even though we weren’t there at the time.

Wow, the philosophy of vBulletin…
