A co-worker and I got into a disagreement over what is ‘sappy’. I mentioned a love song that I thought was beautiful. It’s by Earth, Wind & Fire and it’s called I’ll Write A Song For You.
Co-worker insists this song is NOT by E,W&F. It is sung by a woman and is the sappiest song ever sung. I thought that perhaps these are two different songs. But we both agree they share the words, “I’ll write a song for you- you write a song for me.” However, co-worker does not remember the harmonizing at the end that the EW&F version has.
Soooo. Does anybody remember either versions of this song and are they covers of each other?
The All-Music Guide credits songwriting to Philip Bailey, Steve Buckmeier, and Al McKay. EWF recorded it in 1977; Bailey and McKay are both members of the group, so that was most likely the original version.
McKay did a solo version in 1984, and others who have recorded it include Regina Carter, Chico Freeman, and Christian McBride.
