Not Without My Asphalt

This thread was just getting interesting when Chronos shut us down for my regrettable thread title (sorry, boss).

The last few posts indicated a difference of opinion re: the relative durability of asphalt vs. concrete.

I also want to know if you can have white road surfaces that aren’t made from concrete.

I’m also wondering just how much black road surfaces contribute to a city’s smog problems. Seems like spent combustion gases and the city’s latitude and altitude would have much more to do with it.

Let’s pick up where I left off:

I stated that concrete is much more durable than asphalt, and has several other benefits than does the lowely asphalt.

However, I think the reason why asphalt is prevelant is cost. Concrete IS much more expensive than asphalt.

Though concrete lasts longer, I think asphalt is so much cheaper than concrete that they would rather just replace it every 5 years than pay one lump sum to do the job right once for 30 years (our tax dollars hard at work).

Thanks USDOT!

That explains at least some of your question, fiver.
