Nouns that refer to one of many kinds, and all the kinds as well...

Over in the pit, we were having a discussion about sexist language, and the business of “man” referring to the males of the human species as well as the entire species, male and female, and even females of the species alone in some (stupid) instances came up. I was trying to think of other examples of words that worked this way as well, words that were not sex related.

But the only other example I could come up with was “dog”, which is still about sex: “dog” refers to both the male and the entire species.

Someone else suggested “dress” which refers to garments in general and a garment in particular, and I guess that’s nearly the same.

I know there must be others. Can anyone think of any?

Goose - a non-discrimating term for any one of the species; Goose - the female goose to differentiate from the gander.

Moon refers to the moon orbiting earth or any moon orbiting a planet. It’s similar with satellite. Also sun.

American means someone from the USA or someone from the American continents.

In spanish carne means meat or beef.

Drugs means illegal drugs or any kind of drugs.

In some places, “coke” means soda, along with coca-cola.
