Novelist looking for information for scene

I am about to finish the first draft of my first full-length novel and am seeking information that would allow me to write a scene in which one of the main characters is discharged from the Army under a “Section 8,” for mental instability.

Right now I understand only that the term went out of use in the 1950’s and that said form of discharge was given on a blue sheet of paper (much like we say someone got their “pink slip” when they are fired from a job). I’m wondering if any description of ***how the process was actually carried out ***is available to the public. So far both Yahoo!Answers and Google searches have not helped.

Can anyone, especially ex-military folk, point me in the right direction?

Thank you very much.

Here is a discussion called “Section 8 discharge stories” I found on usenet (well, Google Groups). There might be some stories in there that are helpful, or at least perhaps you can contact the author of the posts to get more leads.
