Now listen up, all you sons of bitches. It's Lake America now

Why isn’t the moron calling it Lake Trump (and further south, Gulf of Trump) or Lake US[A]? Everything on this side of the world is America. The jack ass isn’t even consistent in his idiocy.

Because that’s already taken.

Right. To be clear—and without saying “Lake America” is clever (it is not) or that “Gulf of America” or “Mount McKinley” are anything other than childish trolling (they are not)—that’s going to be the policy of any mapping company that wants to do business internationally.

Most of the world lives in a country that has at least one cartographic idiosyncrasy that their leadership is precious about, or pretends to be when it scores political points. Just by descending order of population, the top 10 that get us over half and which I’m aware of because the company (not Google) I work for has unique views defined:

  • India and Pakistan do not believe Kashmir should be shown as disputed, they just disagree on who it belongs to
  • China has opinions on Taiwan, its own several contested borders, the Senkaku Islands, and (along with Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam) the Spratlys
  • The United States… well.
  • Brazil does not believe Brazilian Island (on its border with Uruguay and Argentina) should be shown as disputed
  • Russia believes that Crimea is Russian
  • Japan believes that the East Sea is the Sea of Japan, no parenthetical required
  • Egypt considers the Halaib Triangle to be within its borders
  • Turkey alone recognizes the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

(Most of these of course have smaller parties on the other side of the dispute, but these are often aligned with international opinion or consensus on a name or that a border should be considered in dispute. About 2/3rds of the world lives in a country that gets its own special map, distinct from the “international” version for one reason or another)

And this is just about one’s own territories, and not whether one’s government has official opinions on the West Bank, or the name of Macedonia, or whether it is the “Persian” Gulf or the “Arabian” Gulf. Or, for that matter, how to localize names (Cologne vs Köln, say), which is basically uncontroversial.

To some extent it is of course just dick-measuring—they are the same islands whether you call them the Falklands or the Malvinas and we know what you mean either way. But, since politicians will make hay out of it, it’s always easier to add another asterisk, and a new row to a table that already has hundreds upon hundreds of rows.

Let’s hope they do a better job than Tommy Crooks.
Prevention is better than cure.

QFT

That didn’t take long.

This latest renaming pisses me off so much. It’s one of those things that, though it’s far from the worst thing he’s done in the grand scheme, it’s so emblematic of who and what he is. It’s just so stupid, pointless, petty and juvenile. All this idiot can do is start unnecessary wars, plan ballrooms and other structures honoring himself, randomly slap tariffs on other countries, make billionaires richer, and rename shit.

The Falklands/Islas Malvinas was the first thing that came to mind for me. Google Maps shows both names for me (with Islas Malvinas in brackets).

You know, Trump is a troll and his goal is to piss off “the right people”. This is a distraction from his attempt to get Canada to swear fealty to the US, and to the war in Iran. Yes, it’s a waste of taxpayer money, but it’s not really very important. Focus on the big stuff.

You’re right, and I do. Try to, at least.

But like I say, this is one of those things that, though not a very big deal in and of itself, is just so representative of what a colossally petty, petulant child he is.

And racist. He’s racist, as well.

I ran across a comment on a YouTube thing recently where the YouTuber (who is British) kinda said, “wow, this is dumb” and one of the comments was, “it pisses off all the right people, so i like it”. There are people like that out there. They like Trump, they still like Trump. He does this stuff for them, and the more normal people react, the happier they are.

One small thing that annoyed me (since I’ve seen the clip more than once on various news shows) was that he crossed out Lake Ontario and replaced it with Lake America.

Why didn’t he just cross out Ontario? There’s no reason he couldn’t use the 'Lake" already there. As I said, it’s a little thing, but another instance of his childish dumbosity.

The old name used the Canadian spelling of “lake”.

Not so much spelling, but pronunciation (“L-eh-ke”).

The greatest punishment you can dole out to a narcissist is to ignore them, completely.

Just wait for the executive order banning the use of the superfluous “u”.

. . . all while dismantling healthcare, education, the environment . . .things that actually matter. Same things Trump is destroying. Same priority - self promotion & greed.
His sign fiasco is nothing more than a tawdry election gimmick. Sadly, it may just work.

Very true. But even so, it looks as though it’s time for a new logo:

There’s certainly more consequential damaging stuff being done by this criminal regime, but this ignorant change by the Orange Troll really does matter to many, especially people who have long lived in close proximity to the Great Lakes, especially on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Fortunately for the large Canadian population in the “Golden Horseshoe” from St. Catharines through Hamilton, Toronto, Oshawa, and dozens of other lakeshore communities, it will still and always be “Lake Ontario”. But it must be at least somewhat disruptive and distressing for those who have made their homes on the shores of the American side.
