Which means that what otherwise would be an obscure night-court hearing on a petty misdemeanor is going to be a focus of national media attention.

WASHINGTON – The prospect that Sen. Larry Craig would cling to his job dimmed Thursday, with aides calling it increasingly likely he will resign as promised. Texas’ senators have played key roles in the GOP effort to push the Idaho lawmaker into early retirement after an arrest in a men’s room sex sting but kept their views on whether and when he should leave office to themselves.

“Things are in flux,” said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. “This is not anything that I’m going to comment on right now.”

As a member of the party’s Senate leadership, Ms. Hutchison signed a letter last week stripping Mr. Craig of his committee assignments and initiating an ethics complaint against him as part of a rapid effort by Republicans to distance themselves from a political embarrassment.

She said she’s spoken with Mr. Craig but wouldn’t say whether that was before or after he announced Saturday that he would give up his Senate seat. Under intense pressure and with virtually no colleagues coming to his defense, he faced ongoing ridicule by TV comics as cable news stations played and replayed his post-arrest interrogation.

Less than one week after announcing his intention to resign from office, embattled Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) changed course today, telling reporters in Washington, “I will not blow this job.”

Over the past few days, there had been whispers in Republican circles that Sen. Craig had, in the words of one of the Idaho senator’s associates, “pulled out too early.”

But even as Sen. Craig picked up the support of Sen. Specter, a source close to the Republican caucus indicated that most Republicans are “backing away” from Sen. Craig.

For his part, Sen. Craig told reporters that he would take whatever steps are necessary to find favor with his Republican colleagues: “I will absolutely bend over backwards.”
