I think that meme was supposed to be saying supporting trans kids is the same as sterilizing autistic kids, but it failed spectacularly. I don’t think sterilizing children is generally a libertarian desire but this meme certainly makes it seem like it is.
It failed so badly that nothing in it even hints that it’s the original meaning. In other words. I don’t think that was the original meaning. It’s very blatantly not saying that.
Libertarians also don’t believe in persecuting trans people, that’s part of the whole “small government needs to leave people alone” philosophy. But looking at the Facebook page of this particular “redheaded libertarian” shows some anti-trans hatred.
In other words, the meme is from a person expressing their own personal abhorrent views, not representative of libertarianism in general.
You’d think someone as terminally online as Elmo wouldn’t be so terrible at memes, but then again this is a guy who thinks “I’m not cis, you are” is some kind of epic burn.
If only I weren’t a mere mortal, maybe I could understand what goes on in his head.
That’s what they say. In practice, not so much. Long ago I used to think I was libertarian till I started hanging out with them. That was in my own personal transition from republican → libertarian → democrat/sane party.
I personally find it difficult to accept that this person is genuinely saying “I don’t like supporting trans kids, I like sterilizing autistic kids” no matter how odious they might be. But you do you.
I think it’s a horrible attempt at saying trans folks are autistic. And, by supporting any sort of surgery related to that, you are sterilizing those very same autistic folks. I could be reading this shitty meme wrong though.
AFAICT It’s saying the kind of people that are opposed to supporting trans kids are people that would be OK with sterilizing autistic kids.
It could be seen as implying that we should be sterilizing trans kids, endorsing this,
“If transgenderism is false, as it is,” Knowles {Michael Knowles at CPAC} continued, “then we should not indulge it, especially since that indulgence requires taking away the rights and customs of so many people. If it is false, then for the good of society, and especially for the good of the poor people who have fallen prey to this confusion, transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely. The whole preposterous ideology — at every level.”
I think this absolutely proves it is a terrible meme: I see something completely different than you. Shouldn’t a meme not be open to interpretation? Or, have memes traversed into “art”. Piss Jesus: Art or blasphemy?
That’s a pretty common meme format. And the usual meaning is that the picture on top is stupid and bad (hence Drake shying away from it) and the thing on bottom is smart and good.
And since @Smapti didn’t include a link, I tried looking up her account to see if it was real. I didn’t find this particular comment (yet), but I do note that she does not at all come across like the type of libertarian @Mr.E seems to be talking about.
She’s very much pro-Tucker Carlson, and has multiple transphobic comments about Elliot Page. She refers to parents “transing” their kids. She believes autistic children are targeted by trans people.
Edit: found the post. And she follows it with her “proof” to explain the post.
@Mr.E has it basically right. She cites an article that claims that most children who transition are in fact autistic. And, of course, much of the replies are calling her out either for hating autistic kids or being too stupid to understand the meme format.
Still, Musk did retweet it. And surely he knows enough about online culture to know what the meme means, even if she screwed it up.
On Twitter itself, it’s been a custom of many for quite some time now that, when spotlighting a particularly odious or offensive tweet, you should use a screenshot rather than a link or retweet so as to deny the poster the satisfaction of a higher view count. That’s how I saw the tweet, so that’s how I shared it - and in this case the screenshot is what provides the essential context, which is that Elmo gave it a like.
It really depends on what a stronger form of mute looks like. But I wouldn’t know, as I’ve never blocked anyone. We’ll have to wait and see what the implementation looks like.
I’m honestly not sure which of the 20 Tesla threads to put this in, so fuck it, I’m putting it here:. Mary Barra, the head of GM, just organized a spaces discussion with Elmo. Sounds like something to do with a partnership on charging.
