I don’t recall claiming in any post Musk is a great coder or sw expert. As far as I can tell he was a self taught coder with probably a basic/working knowledge of how coding and the software works.

And yet he is often portrayed as a software genius by many, including by himself, despite all evidence to the contrary. Why are you handwaving away all the evidence of Musk’s actual personal failings?

And which of his companies is referenced in the title of this thread?

Steve Jobs was not a technical guy at all in Apple (it was Wozniak who was the tech brains). Why is Jobs then widely credited for the success of Apple ?

Did Jobs make endless public pronouncements about software that were demonstrably, laughably wrong, as Musk has done? Did he, despite not being a “technical guy”, nonetheless tell Wozniak and the other actual technical guys how to code, as Musk has done?

Are Bill Gates or Zuckerberg or Satya Nadella expert coders or sw engineers (present day standards) ?

Did Elon Musk start Twitter from scratch (more or less) as Bill Gates did? Or did he take an already-built company and make it demonstrably worse through his own incompetence? And why did you feel the need to specify “present day standards”?

Here are some more comments about Musk from “technical guys”:

The fact that he has such a boner for “hardcore coding” is all the proof I need that he has no idea what the fuck he is talking about. Developers, in my 20 years of experience, do not come up with great solutions to complex problems after 18 hours of slaving away while propped up by shitty coffee laboring under the awesome headache inducing light that is modern office lighting.

Being well rested, playing with ideas, experimenting, having the ability to take risks, fail and try again without fear of being terminated, liking what you do - those are all things that lead to far better outcomes than long hours you only deal with because you believe in a higher cause (Tesla, SpaceX) or because you are H1B visa holders who have yet to find another employer (Twitter).

Additionally, the fact that he oracles on about how Twitter’s stack needs to be completely re-written is another good indicator that he has no idea how anything there works. If he did it would be easy for him to point to their visualization, timeline, storage or something similarly specific as the #1 problem that needs to be solved. Not being able to rank individual elements in terms of their likely impact to the overall problem implies he understands neither the elements or the problem.

The creator of Dogecoin sent him a Python script that he used, and Elon couldn’t figure out how to run it. I can understand that if Elon coded, he did it before Python really took off and running his companies would have arguably taken him out of day to day programming for all of these years. However, anyone who had skills to program in the lower level tools that were all that was available in the early 90’s should be capable of doing a Google search and figuring out how to run a Python script in less than five minutes, or at least having the self awareness to quietly reach out to one of his senior engineers for help. link

X now has long form tweets, video and long Form video, community notes, Grok AI integration and a few other things that erstwhile Twitter never did in all of its existence. Yes technologically X is now way better than Twitter ever was. And I did say economically it was a foolish decision. After he fired 80 % of the people, people were speculating of its impending demise or come crashing down. “No way a company can function with 80% less employees” was the MS media gospel. He did prove them totally wrong. Either Twitter was bloated with “paper pushers” masquerading as employees or Musk knows better.

And hey he did start SpaceX from scratch and look where it is. The US of A is totally dependent on his company for putting military satellites into orbit and sending its astronauts to space and using his Starlink in Ukraine. And yes goverment gave more funding to Blue Origin than SpaceX…Boeing too got many “cost+” contracts and where are they now ?

It really isn’t, as its many technical failures have demonstrated. And how’s that block function working for you?

And that’s ignoring the fact that Musk deliberately took one of the leading social media platforms (and amateur news reporting sites) in the world and turned it into a cesspool of Nazi and antisemitic propaganda, horrific transphobia, insane conspiracy theories and child pornography. At least three of those topics are things Elon frequently promulgates himself there.

So perhaps you were closer than you think with regards to Musk being a doddering imbecile.
