So the purpose of the bots is to try to establish a relationship as a “follower” and then scam the victim? Is that all that this is about?

Purposes vary. In the old days, people would buy bots to boost their follower count. Russia troll-bots were also popular: they were human moderated accounts that would attack the Dems, boost Trump and spread misinformation.

Today’s bots are mostly porn-bots and scam-bots. Porn-bots have a link on their profile to onlyfans, an onlyfans knockoff, or a malware provider - who knows? Scam-bots hope for a follow back. So-called pig butchering is popular now: John Oliver profiled it. Chinese organized crime syndicates operate at a higher level. Endgame is to get you to invest in crypto, load a bogus app on your phone, raid your crypto wallet. Though there are a variety of harvesting methods. Details:

This is a nice hook. Disagree. Scam baiting is a legitimate hobby. There are also data-bots that reportedly scrape accounts of those they follow. I’m not sure what the point of that is, and my internet sources were vague and presumably uninformed.
