Here in Mississippi, if you’ve checked the news today, we’ve voting on the flag issue. Dunno how it’ll end, but turnout here in Hinds County was heavy. (They should have had a real election along with this…)
Ads? I only heard a few, and that was today and yesterday. The ones for keeping the old one have been pushing the idea that keeping the old flag is “Honoring your ancestors” and “Part of good old family values.” Snort
Ah, yes, the flag thing. Heard about it on the local news here in NY. Since I’ll be moving there in four months, of course my dad had to comment about it. My mother says that most of Mississippi wants to keep the old flag. Since she’s in the same house as me and is presumably NOT connected to the collective conscious of MS, I have no idea where she’s getting her information.
Most of Mississippi has no clue what to think. This is truly odd, because it’s split across racial boundaries. Some people want to keep it because they either like it, don’t see a problem with it, or get offended when people from other places tell them what to do. That last catagory has a lot of people in it. Then some people want to change it because they either think it’s racist, or just hate the current one.
Ironically, if you vote for the new flag, you’re also approving an amendment that’ll protect Confederate monuments from harm or further legislation. If the old one wins, there’s no such protection.
So maybe I’ll end up renting a bulldozer and plowing under a few acres of Confederate memorials in protest yet.
