NRA No Way! Companies affiliated re-thinking things due to Parkland

More companies end ties with NRA as pressure mounts:

Now that’s some good old-fashioned protesting being done in a new-fangled technological kind of way.

I learned as a kid and I still feel today: everything is political; know what you’re doing. Don’t spend your money at a place of business that supports shitty ideas and policies. Vote with your wallet, etc.

Of course it remains to be seen how much of an impact this will have, but it’s starting to feel like there’s some cracks in the facade, eh.

To paraphrase Holden: Fuck the NRA. Fuck them right up their stupid asses.

“You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he’s really sick… And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they’re both faggots… And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin’ a bar [and] walking out. They may think it’s an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said fifty people a day walking in… and walking out. And friends they may thinks it’s a movement”

Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, Arlo Guthrie.

This time things ARE different. And the difference is your wonderful kids stepping up to the plate and saying NO MORE.

Bravo to those companies cutting ties to the NRA, and bless those who join in the ‘movement’. May this be the catalyst for change in the US.

Much as I despise the NRA, this seems like bandwagon-jumping. I doubt that anyone joins the NRA to get the discount on car rentals, nor do I think the car rental company pays the NRA for the privilege. So ending the discount is not cutting off their support of the organization—it’s saying they don’t want to be associated with NRA members.

When my local movie theatre gives military in uniform a 10% discount, I don’t think of that as support for the Dept. of Defense, and certainly not as support for the war in Afghanistan. I certainly wouldn’t think that boycotting the movie theater is an effective way to change DoD policy.

And if enough people jump on that bandwagon, then the current climate of blind acceptance of the NRA cools considerably.

That sounds good to me, baby steps and all.

Ya know what, if you made it clear to the theater manager and to the press and to everyone who you could of your reason for the boycott, and millions of people all across the country joined you and publicly said why, do you think it would have no impact on the theater’s policies?

Also ‘abandonment’!

This is about to get complicated, IMO.

If companies and people leave the NRA, they’re going to start (justifiably) feeling abandoned. That could lead to a backed-in-the-corner mentality and who the hell knows what happens then?

The NRA has waaaaay too much influence on politicians and policy and they need to be bright down many notches. “Bandwagon jumping”? You better believe it!

Oh, I’m just weeping for the gun owners who have been “burned too many times.” :sob:. Not.

Tmurp has all the resolve of a limp piece of spaghetti so he’ll come out against gun regulations once he hears complaints from his gun rabid base. Then all negotiations will be over and it’ll be back to school shootings as usual. The only thing you can count on that big orange baby for is to do whatever is bad for the people.

I’d like to think that more companies cutting ties with the NRA will at least help marginalize them (the NRA) but not sure that will be enough. The actual action has to come from Congress and the prez, and that’s not too likely right now.

Then, when they are not looking, we take their guns and melt them into bricks for the Great Wall of America.

It’s got a nice ring to it, doesn’t it: the Border Wall of Guns!

ETA: Or maybe just ‘the Gunwall’.

It demonstrates that the NRA is not as powerful as it pretends to be. These companies cut ties, and won’t suffer for it. That’s a black eye for the NRA.

They’ve felt that way for decades. Fuck’em.

Or an Iron Throne

This X 100! Call their bluff, those stupid bastards!

Things are accelerating:

Car rentals and banks and credit cards:

And the biggie:

These young men and women totally fucking rock! Go Eagles!

ETA: To be clear, Wendy Glaab also totally fucking rocks!

Then there’s that delicious rumor about Russian money funneled into the NRA.

Now, Universe, I know I haven’t been a very good pantheist, but if you could just give me this one sign…

I’m worried of what the outcome of this being true would be.

No, not really: it’s just saying they don’t want to explicitly reward membership in the organization by giving it a monetary benefit. I’m sure none of these businesses have any objection to dealing with any NRA members who are willing to pay full price for their services just like everybody else.

Sure, but that’s because serving one’s country in uniform is widely and traditionally viewed as a brave and civic-minded act irrespective of specific military engagements and policies at any particular time.

Membership in the NRA, on the other hand, currently serves no recognized purpose other than to further the NRA’s political agenda. Many ex-NRA members have commented that the organization used to be more like a gun sports club but is now essentially a political action group.

Me too.

IIRC the original allegation was that the Russians gave millions to the NRA and that the NRA donated that money to the trump campaign, thus getting around those pesky laws that forbid foreign entities from donating to US campaigns. According to one report the NRA spent $30 million to support trump, about 3 times as much as they spent to support Romney – a factoid that if true supports the allegation.

Does anyone know what would happen if this is all proven true? I can’t see how it would be legal to circumvent election financing law by running the money through a US organization. Does that mean the NRA is subject to criminal charges? What would possible penalties be?

I’d like to think this would result in disbanding the NRA, but I suspect that wouldn’t make much difference – their members would simply flee to another organization and everything pretty much stays the same.
