Can anyone recommend me a reasonably priced mask suitable for protection against moderate levels of radioactive fallout? Preferably not involving battery’s etc. Just strap it on and go.
Any dust mask you can get from Home Depot will protect you from most of it. Fallout is just dust. Specifically, dust that you really want to avoid getting in your lungs. So any mask designed to keep dust from getting in your lungs will work.
Depends on what “moderate levels” means. Cleanup workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant wear full face respirators; this Japanese document (PDF) talks about downgrading from 99.9% efficiency dust filters + charcoal filters to just 99.9% dust filters because the radioactive iodine was mostly gone. Which implies you probably want the charcoal filter to deal with fresh nuclear fallout. From the photo, the dust+charcoal mask looks like 3M 6700 respirators with 60921 cartridges.
Workers near the plant wear NIOSH N95 equivalent dust masks. That’s the kind you can find at the hardware section of Walmart.
A good pair of goggles might well be in order. Need answer fast?
Not too fast. Maybe a week or 2.
You want the optional bunny suit that goes with the mask, go playing in the gray snow with just the mask and your gonna be dead in six weeks regardless.
I’m counting on it not being too bad in Europe. Maybe just a smidgen blowing in the wind for a while.

Go on amazon and order a (newer/recent model) surplus NATO NBC mask if you’re worried. Just make sure you get the real deal in filters that fit.
The OP probably watches the news. There has been a fair amount of nuclear saber rattling in the past few weeks.
Man, and I thought a nuclear artillery shell or a nuclear hand grenade would be unwise, but a nuclear saber?

If you don’t have a MOP or bunny suit and don’t know and follow the full-body decon procedures, the mask isn’t going to do shit. You’ll still end up loaded with emitters and that’ll be that.
