Nuclear War

Not the real thing, but the card game. Has anyone else here played it? It’s rather old (70’s or 80’s, I think). It’s rather violent in a sense, but it’s so hilarious with the pictures and descriptions of the cards.

Think about it…what other game do you play in which you get to fire an MX Missile at an enemy with a 200 megaton warhead on it?

It’s a hilarious game–delightfully cynical! And I forget who, but it seems like at least one other person has played it–I saw someone reference the bumper sticker “Got change for 25 (?) million people?” on the funniest bumper sticker thread.

Actually, as card games go, I like it, but prefer Wiz War and Family Business. Also Kremlin, but that’s a bit dated and isn’t strictly a card game.

Man, you guys have all the neat toys. I have never seen any one of those card games.

I play on a semi-regular basis. Maybe 3 or 4 times a
year, down from once a week during the late 80s.
I haven’t seen the people I played with in High School
for about 10 years. We’ve all gone our separate ways,
so I have to do some fancy talking to get my post-college
friends to play. I get some funny looks the first time I ask someone if
they’d like to play Nuclear War.

The last time I played, about 4 months ago, I managed to
hit a nuclear stockpile during my final retaliation
with a 100-megaton warhead. Blew up the earth.

I only have Nuclear War and Nuclear Escallation, though.
Want to get Nuclear Proliferation so I can reload the space platform.

Now that I have revealed myself as a super geek, I’ll go away.

BTW: That was me who posted the “Do you have change for 25 million people?” bumper sticker.

P.S. Does anyone remember a card game called Red Empire?
I want to buy a copy, but don’t know wha company made it.

For more info on the game, go to

One of my older brother’s has all three, and we kinda made up our own stuff for the game. We copied more population cards so we could play with more people, we made our own cards (A Nuclear Battleship for example), we edited some of the old rules and made some of our own, and got expansion packs for it. You gotta love the 200 megaton warhead…if you get a double yield on the dice, you ignite the atmosphere of the Earth and incinerate everyone and everything. Oh well, that’s the price of war, I guess.

My favorite ‘Secret’ card is the one “25 million of the enemy population mysteriously vanish”.

Another one of my brothers made a secret card “The Moon fell out of orbital alignment with the Earth and landed on your enemy’s country. He loses 25 million people”.

I vaguely remember a computer game for the amiga that was called nuclear war that seems to be the computerized version of your card game. Don’t remember much but it was a great game and you got to send missiles on Margaret Thatcher, Gorbatjov and others with various megaton warheads. Anyone else seen it? Would love to play it again.

Hey, Monster, ya lil’ weenie, you forgot to mention the greatest card of all… the almighty “NO” card.

Basically, somebody does something bad, and you toss this card out to, well, say “NO.”

“I’ll launch an MX missile with a 200 megaton warhead…”

“Uh… no.”

It’s always fun to watch the veins in someone’s forehead swell up.

So it was–my apologies for not looking it up. I’m not usually that lazy.

My compliments on your card gaming tastes and tastes in bumper stickers!

I vaguely recall this game. Very fuzzy recollection that it was either put out by a very small gaming company (probably now defunct) or Game Designers Workshop. Hope this helps.

That’s OK, usually I AM that lazy!

It’s a place to start. Thanks!

My roommate has all of three Nuclear War games (or should I say, the original game and the two expansions). In large groups, the game is a real hoot. I remember my friend and I participated in a Nuke War tourney at a con some years back. Since we knew each other, and since we wound up at the same table at me point, we had some poor kid cowed into nuking everyone else at the table except us (“But if I don’t, they’ll nuke me!”)

The company you’re looking for is Flying Buffalo Games. They’re still in business, as you can see by the website (or they were quiterecently, anyhow).

Now I’ve looked 'em up, I might have to order Nuclear War myself. I’ve played it a few times and it’s quite a bit of fun, especially if you have a sick sense of humor.

~~Baloo

Baloo–Motorgirl was asking about the company that produced the game “Red Empires” and not “Nuclear War” (at least, I hope not, since she herself provided a link to Flying Buffalo Games)

Yep, I can space out, but not usually that bad!

I was looking for the company that did Red Empire, rather than Nuclear War, but I thank Baloo for trying to help. It is appreciated.

Lunch Money, anyone?
