Nudity everywhere: does it make everything worse or better?

Parents have the right to decide on the values they pass onto their children as long as those values are not detrimental to society as a whole. The Janet Jackson fiasco unreasonably intruded upon the these parent’s values regarding sex and nudity. It was very reasonable to assume that type of nudity would not be shown on prime time television. SlyFrog already explained this.

Children should not be exposed to adverse countering values that could potentially cause harm with them fitting in with their family, community or society. Public indecent exposure in the United States is an important issue. Public nudity or indecent exposure is generally not accepted in American society and you will be punished (if caught) for violating these values of sexual ignorance (or repression). Teaching them indecent exposure as insignificant and ok would be sending the wrong message (television is such a great teaching tool, haha) as to what is acceptable behavior in this society. What I found disgusting is that Justin Timberlake and other people brushed this issue aside as insignificant. The arrogant disregard for other peoples’ values really shows them to be pompous egocentric asses. As a side note, I think it’s not as bad as constantly exposing (or forcing upon) non-Christian kids to the term “under God” in the pledge of allegiance.

I’ll have to side with SlyFrog on the moderation of this board and most every internet forum I’ve been to. It’s really ludicrous to expect SlyFrog to take condescending attacks in an indirect manner when he or she can’t counterattack directly. I won’t be here long or any forum because I can never conform to societal and internet values and standards of acceptable behavior.

I think an old song from the twenties sums it up…“In days of yore a sight of stocking was something shocking, now heaven knows…anything goes. The world has gone mad today, good is bad today, black is white today, day is night to day etc.” Anything goes!

It is a culture thing. Some would suggest a woman should wear a Burka because men are so weak :). There is little crime against women in cultures that do not wear clothes. Makes one wonder doesn’t it?

I tried these links when I got home and couldn’t get through.

Violence built and protected this country. Sex didn’t do much but populate it, and immigration did that better.

No, just topless.

I think this says everything that needs to be said about the bizarre nature of American sensibility to nudity and sex in particular.

Nudity does not equal sex does not equal violence.

I’m not a nudist and have absolutely no desire to walk about unclothed in public. But American attitudes (from the entire range of conservative to the most liberally minded) about what everyone has (a naked body) just defies analysis.

LA Times article from today: If topless, They’ll be busted

No idea what’s going on. I can’t seem to go to the link either, first time. But when I copy the link-address (right-click, copy link address) and paste into another window it works just fine. And if I then click on the original link after that it works fine too - but first you have to manually copy and paste the link address. It seems to be the space character which is giving SDMB some problems. The links are ok.

Actually, the server hosting the pictures is probably blocking hotlinks (direct links to files). When you click on a link, your browser sends the address of the page on which you clicked the link(the ‘referrer’), to the server. The server can then be programmed to allow/deny requests based on the referrer.

The referrer is blank when you access the page from the browser address bar. Most sites don’t block such requests.

In Oregon there are several state owned clothing optional sites, a beach on Sauvie Island and part of Rooster Rock park near Portland are both clearly labelled as such, as is Cougar Hot Springs outside Eugene. According to some nudist friends, there are actually no statutes regarding nudity in National Forests, either, so while it’s not officially sanctioned to go hiking in the buff it’s also not against any laws. Not too many years ago a radio personality with some major hooters on her took a stroll through Waterfront Park in downtown Portland without her shirt on to see if she’d catch any flak and the po-pos declined to make an issue of it. It’s pretty tough in Oregon to get arrested just for being naked, it’s more an issue of being an asshole about it that will get you busted. As an aside to the radio stunt, she performed this feat in very early spring, so I guess the exposure was de facto its own punishment. Probably coulda etched glass with THOSE nipples!

And yeah, you get the requisite groups of clothed guys (usually Hispanic, for some reason) hanging out together drinking beer and ogling–the guys with the pierced packages on parade get an especial kick out of walking up and down the beach right in front of them and obstructing their view of the women.
