Numbers on tooth brushes

I think I know a higher number means a softer brush. Is this true or what? Or is it not directly related to how soft a brush is?

I keep thinking next time I’m going to get the ideal brush but I never do.

I think a higher number just means more bristles.
But I’m often wrong.

my family has been in the dentistry business for a while, but I am no dental expert. From what I understood, the number is the size of the head of the toothbrush. Then there should be another indicator that says soft, medium or hard. They say you shouldnt really use a hard toothbrush because it can erode your gums - but sometimes nothing does the job of scrubbin’ like a hard toothbrush. Hope that helps.
