Numbers with common associations

56 for me is associated with the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and for the 56ers, emigrants from Hungary after the revolution didn’t turn out well. This is probably fairly esoteric for most folks, though.

11 - herbs and spices in KFC secret recipe (not because I love KFC, but Kinky Friedman seemed to mention it a lot in his books as a euphemism for something else)

  1. There is a famous story about the number theorist G.H. Hardy visiting Ramanujan in the hospital and telling him that he had just come in a taxi with a very dull number, 1729. Then Ramanujan is quoted as having said, “No, Hardy, that is the smallest positive number that is the sum of two cubes in two different ways.” The two ways are 1000 + 729 = 1728 + 1. If that quote is accurate (which I doubt), then Ramanujan erred and the correct number is 91. And 91 is interesting for a different reason. It is the smallest non-prime that most people think is prime.

If Ramanujan said “positive cubes” he was correct. But 91 = 3^3 + 4^3 = 6^3 + (-5)^3 = 7*13.

Hari, my head is still spinning.

Let’s not forget 14 k of g in a fpd.

If we get to count the number of representatives in the various states, foreign countries, etc. or the numbers on sports jerseys, we’ll get lots of numbers that are meaningless to many.

And there are 435 representatives. There are 538 electoral votes because DC gets 3, but it has no representative.
