Nutra-sweet cavities?

I understand that humans can’t break down bonds in saccharine and other sugar substitutes, making them zero calorie foods. My question is if the bacteria that cause tooth decay (cavities) can get energy from nutra-sweet. In other words…Does drinking Diet Pepsi cause cavities?

well… i have been known to eat packets of equal when im at restauraunts and all my friends are eating and of course i am broke… so no food for me.

no cavities ever… at all.

I doubt (without being able to prove it) that bacteria can use nutrasweet as a food to any significant degree. The problem with pepsi/coke is the acidity, which can exacerbate damage to enamel. But, I recall a study that said the amount of time that such drinks were in contact with the teeth was not enough to cause damage. Carry a toothbrush and use it frequently, or at least have a sip of water to wash the acid/sugar/nutrasweet away.

Chew sugarless gum too.
