NY Cops fire at man and hit two bystanders instead.

No it’s not. But it is a lot tougher to fire accurately.

Then you should know what I am talking about. You probably fired a standard single action/double action pistol. I’m sure you noticed that the first round with the hammer down was much harder to fire accurately.

I’ll use one of the most common pistols as an example. A Beretta 92f (what the US military calls the M9) is a SA/DA pistol. The first round with the hammer down is double action. A 92f fired DA has a 10-12lbs trigger pull. After the first round the hammer remains cocked and each subsequent round is single action. The trigger pull then is about 6lbs. If you have fired a SA/DA pistol before you already know which way is harder to shoot. The NYPD is required to have all their pistols be double action only with a heavy trigger pull. Sure I’ve seen cites where people talk about getting used to it after shooting several thousand rounds. Quite frankly most cops are not that into shooting on their own time and no one is paying for it.

It’s not impossible to shoot. It’s not an excuse. But it is a factor which can lead to inaccuracy.
