I just logged on and got the bad news: I can only read/access 20 articles per month-after that, I get a nice fat ad blocking my view!
I guess it had to be-millions of freeloaders like me taking advantage of the Times!
So it looks like the trend is clear-print subscribers are no longer going to subsidize on-line readers, who get access for nothing.
When will other newspapers start doing this? I also noted that sites like Drudge , which provide links to NYT articles, are free-the links still work…for now.
So, will free access to the news become a thing of the past?
Have you been living under a rock? People have been bemoaning this move for months.
Just delete everything after the ? in the URL when they beg you for money.
Seems like a good way to encourage news piracy. There will always be people who haven’t used their quota of articles that will start copying and posting them elsewhere. Or just go to one of the many other good news sources online.
They tried this about 10 years ago as I remember. A lot of their stuff showed up as (complete article) quotes in some message boards. Then they gave up, until recently.
There are at least two ways to continue to get nytimes.com free. I just tried them both to confirm. One you should be able to figure out yourself. Just go to Google Advanced News Search and put new york times in the domain. This will not look like the old nytimes.com but it is still there. There was some talk that NYT might put an end to this. The last story was they were in on hurry.
I get the Sunday Times, so I’m all set. Don’t worry, I steal other stuff.
