NYC Mayor election thread

Back to the ridiculous Mamdani box-check stuff – he didn’t just check “Black/African American” and move on. He also selected “Asian” and wrote in Ugandan. He was just a teenager. It’s entirely possible that he thought because he was born in Uganda that this was a reasonable choice considering the options available.

Who among us hasn’t accidentally filled in a form wrong? I’ve done it on important things like the Census and the ones you get at a new Doctor’s. If you aren’t paying attention or the form is poorly structured, it’s an easy thing to do and should not be proof of anything but clumsiness or misunderstanding poorly written instructions.

I mean, who’s even to say that how he filled it out was wrong?

Lasker isn’t the hacker. That would be silly. An unknown hacker passed the data to Crémieux, who may or may not be Lasker.

Regardless, it was the New York Times that decided the story was newsworthy. It was the New York Times that vetted the data. It was the New York Times that confirmed the claim with Mamdani. It was the New York Times that published the story. And above all, it was the New York Times that lent the credibility of their name to the story by virtue of doing all these things.

Whatever negative thing you say about this story, the motives behind it, whatever–apply equally to the New York Times as to the source. More so, in fact, since Joe Random Hacker has no inherent credibility, while the NYT does.

This form thing is no big deal to me.

Thanks, I think “rent stabilized” was the term she used, and I’ll withdraw the question.

It’s not a big deal for Mamdani but it’s worrying that the NYT published a hit piece so that a weird race science blogger could make money with insider information on election betting.

Cremieux even posted about it.

From a UK perspective, it sounds as though he filled it in entirely (and amply) correctly, for the fair assessment of potential racial/ethnic disadvantage. I don’t suppose he’d have imagined he had to match a particular Pantone shade.

Oh yeah they framed a ‘navigating race and identity is complex for immigrants’ story as ‘non white lied to get an advantage’.

They know how complex race is, but play dumb

Exactly. It’s skewed to play into the racial grievances of ignorant white people.

One might think we should expect better from a news outlet that’s supposed to have a level of credibility, but anyone who’s been paying attention knows that ship sailed away from the Times years ago.

@Babale also moved to America as a child, and apparently knew perfectly well when applying to college that ‘African American’ has a particular meaning in the US that is not ‘immigrated to America from an African country’. If Mamdani wasn’t sure how to fill the form in, he could have asked his college professor father for advice. The guy is from a privileged background (explains why he’s a socialist, lol). Being an immigrant, brown or Muslim does not automatically make a person ignorant, poor, or lacking in useful social connections.

A 9.5 billionaire USD called Bill Ackman is also very worried about the NYC Mayor race and obsessively tweeting about the issue over on twitter.com

I get why, sort of. If I was a mega billions man.you would not see me typing on the internet, there’s so many billions of better things to do but these mega billions freaks want approval of the masses and can’t stand anyone questioning their greatness.

Watch their success turn to ashes in their.mouths when nobody respects them for just acquiring wealth

Remember David Patersen? He’s leading an effort to consolidate the anti-ZM vote:

Why can’t old Democrats welcome young voices that are inspiring young voters? It’s nuts. ZM’s success is great for the party! Sky-high youth turnout is a godsend! What the hell are they thinking?

There’s not much in this thread about Mamdani’s proposed policies. According to his website, his policies include:

  • Freeze rent for all 2 million rent stabilized apartments.

  • Triple production of union built, rent stabilized homes, building 200,000 new units over 10 years.

  • Crackdown on bad landlords, including taking charge of properties if the owner demonstrates consistent neglect.

  • Creating a network of city-owned grocery stores that don’t have to pay rent or property taxes to reduce prices.

  • Permanently eliminate fares on all city buses, and build priority lanes and dedicated loading zones to speed them up.

  • Raise the minimum wage to $30 per hour by 2030.

  • Free childcare for every New Yorker aged 6 weeks to 5 years.

  • Pay for all this by raising corporate tax rate to 11.5%, and a 2% tax on everyone earning over $1 million per year.

Easy to see why this appeals to voters: lower rent, cheaper groceries, free childcare, free transport. Higher wages for the lowest paid. But what do economists think of it all?

Some people here have touched on the policies but yeah, the partisan reaction has grabbed most of the attention. The top half of the list is pretty standard fare for a left-progressive in a high cost of living city, but good luck getting it through the council, and doubly so the parts about making things free or sending min wage to twice what most others are advocating. The “pay for” proposal is where these would likely founder.

(Well if I were a multibillionaire I’d be typing on the Internet, but in the sense of bombarding every platform my every random Deep Thought from the deck of my beach mansion surrounded by my “lovely assistants”. And I would acquire the SDMB. Y’all think y’all have issues with the moderation now… :smiling_face_with_horns: )

But it’s not only they can’t stand anyone questioning their greatness. They can’t figure how come the general collective does not immediately see how the way they think the world should run is the right way, and they must correct that mistake!

Hey, we know what they’re thinking; “They are going to scare all the businesses and financiers across/up the river and into the arms of the Rs, so we’ll end up losing NYC and possibly NJ or CT”

That’s what they view as people not understanding how the world does/should run.

That maybe it should NOT run that way…

Well…

Was Mirko Karan there when this happened?

That appears to be an Australian ecologist? What relevance does he have to anything?

Do…do I have to explain to people that that was a joke?

Was Mirko Karan there when Nancy Pelosi ordered Chuck Schumer to assassinate a young, charismatic Democratic candidate?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say, “no.”
