A reporter asks Mamdani if he thinks Trump is a fascist while he’s standing next to Trump; after an awkward moment, Trump tells him, “You can just say yes”

It was really remarkable to watch Trump fanboy all over Mamdani today. Even took a picture with him in front of an FDR portrait!
Gonna be awfully hard to make the scary Muslim commie into the MAGA boogie man when Trump himself was grinning ear to ear as he gazed over at him and gushed over what a great mayor he’s gonna be.
I’d withhold judgement on that till after Reinhard Heydrich Stephen Miller has at Trump. It wouldn’t surprise me that all of a sudden Mamdani will always have been a Muslim terrorist.
It does kinda track. If there’s one thing Trump cares about, it’s popularity. Mamdani just won the election in a very viral way, and it seems like he was nice of him when they were in person, so of course Trump fawned all over him.
Will the spell last a week, or will it soon break and when questioned on their positive interaction Trump will say something like “I don’t know Mamdani, I never met the guy, and he was really nasty the whole time he was here at the White House, let me tell you that”? With Trump, you never know.
Yeah but come on, in one week’s time, Trump calls MTG a traitor and pushes her out of Congress, and then verbally fellates Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office. I know it’s getting cliche to say, but neither on those things were on my bingo card.
Mamdani is going to be Mayor of New York. Trump has real estate interests in New York. Therefore, Trump is sucking up to Mamdani. It’s not that complicated.
Between Trump and myself, one of us will feel shocked and betrayed by how that works out.
Personally, I’m more with the theory that Mamdani played Trump like a fiddle, complimenting him without giving him anything. And it gives me hope.
Also, Mamdani ran over his party’s Establishment and left them looking like fools. So they have that much in common.

It’s easier than explaining. I don’t mind” (fwiw, i don’t clearly hear Mamdani say “yes”, but he certainly looks like he’s agreeing to what Trump has just requested.)
Thank God Mamdani just had a wonderful afternoon with a person who’s not that bad, like Donald Trump, rather than appearing in any way to align himself with a true monster and fascist, like Liz Cheney. Can you imagine if Liz Cheney said that Mamdani wasn’t as bad as Trump? That would be unforgivable.

I’m just glad that Mamdani is a brilliant politician because he and Trump had a lovely time together, unlike that nasty NeoCon Kamala who dared to allow Liz Cheney say that Kamala was better than Trump - an unforgivable sin. (That’s sarcasm by the way).

I distrust Mamdani and despise Trump. But i used to live in NYC and care a great deal about the city. If it’s not about to melt down due to Trump taking vengeance on the election of a socialist, that’s great news.
I find it interesting how the same people who think Kamala should never have dared to interact with Cheney because that tainted her with NeoCon Cooties for all of time are totally fine with Mamdani and Trump having a grand old time together. It makes me suspect that the opposition to Kamala’s interactions with Cheney were just a BS excuse to shit on Kamala.
I agree, it’s great that Trump won’t “take vengeance” on New York; I find the idea that he totally would have if not for brilliant political play by Mamdani pretty dang far fetched, though. If Trump decides he does want to fuck with NYC, you think a positive interaction with Mamdani will stop him? This is Trump, King of “I’ve never met the guy, I don’t know him, and whenever we are together he is extremely nasty to me”.
Well, first off, i don’t think i even heard that story. So I’m not sure how big the overlap is. Second off, personally, i think politicians need to interact with lots of people, including ones i might personally avoid. I’ve read a lot of dumb stories about “oh noes, he signed a photograph of a Nazi”, and i always think, “he signed every photo they put in front of him, because that’s what politicians do”. And third off, Trump threatened vengeance on NYC if they elected Mamdani, so Mamdani had a clear reason to try to make nice to Trump. Meeting with Trump was really and truly just doing his job, more directly than the usual “meet everyone” schtick.
Honestly, i took it as a good sign that Trump was willing to meet with Mamdani at all. It meant that maybe he’d forgotten his previous bluster. But I’m glad Mamdani charmed Trump, i hope that trend continues. (And cynically, it’s probably worth it to the city to bribe Trump with special treatment on his real estate.)
You don’t think you heard which story? That people were very upset with Kamala over the extremely minor role that Cheney played in her campaign? It was a super common PoV here on the Dope, I’m shocked you didn’t hear it until now. Here’s just the first example that turned up:
Mamdani palling around with Donald Trump - who is just as odious of a person in his own way as Trump - at the White House so they can cosplay best bros was such a bizarre exhibition of intellectual and moral bankruptcy it is difficult to imagine how that conversation got started.
If an Establishment Democrat did what Mamdani did, we would be hearing all about how he’s a collaborator with Fascists and how dare he go and bend the knee to Trump in public like that.
