Heck, IME that’s not even particular to one culture, it’s what many people in many families and communities have been doing to keep things civil for ages.
(What next, they’re going to say he used the Jedi Mind Trick?)

I’ll bet he also says “Jeet jet?” instead of “did you eat yet”?
This much sounds right:
Trump wants drama. He’ll try to get it by first building up Mamdani and then tearing him down. Over the next year or two, Trump will start pushing a narrative where:
a. Trump will say he gave Mamdani a chance.
b. Trump will try to make out Mamdani to be the heart and soul of the Democratic Party.
The model here is Jeremy Corbyn (temporarily) bringing down Labour. Ridiculous because Corbyn really was the leader of his party while Mamdani obviously is not? Yes. But I think this is the kind of move Trump makes.
I think you’re ascribing to him strategic skills and self-control he doesn’t have.
I think @PhillyGuy is underestimating Mamdani.
Well, that’s not good:
Well that was clearly an AI-written analysis, not Fanger’s own words - so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some hallucination going on.
What’s not good? Maybe a quote or a snippet?
Here:
Is Director of Appointments really a “top aide”?
But yeah, that shit is not good at all at all. Thanks.
This is part of what a transition period is for. IIRC this kind of thing (dumb or even hateful statements from some appointee pop up and result in resignation) happened to Biden, Obama, and many more.
So: someone in their mid-thirties said some shitty antisemitic things when they were 20. In the past more-than-a-decade, there’s no sign that they’ve said similar shitty antisemitic things. On getting called on it, they gave an unreserved apology, and Mamdani “accepted her resignation” the same day the story came out.
If she said these things two years ago, or if she gave a non-apology, or if Mamdani kept her on, I’d feel differently. But good grief, this is a scandalmonger in search of a scandal.
I mostly agree, but… when will people learn to keep their damn mouth shut?
When will 19-year-olds? That would be never, friend.
True, but those were some pretty nasty statements. They werent just some accidental blurtings.
Right, which is why I am glad she apologized and resigned. My point about the time difference is that people who have known her for a decade might never have heard her say such a thing, so I don’t think it is scandalous that she got hired for this position.
No, I agree. Mandani maybe needs to do better vetting.
I don’t know the vetting procedures–are we really expecting folks to go back and look at every social media post a person made when they were 19 and 20, for every position? That sounds unnecessary and inefficient.
His whole term is going to be like this.
“Look at this picture of the brother in law of his deputy campaign finance director! See, he’s doing brownface!”
“He’s three years old, messily eating a fudgsicle.”
“Cancelled!”
It’s going to be exhausting.
And the article also says that she said, “As the mother of Jewish children, I feel a profound sense of sadness and remorse at the harm these words have caused,”
I’m guessing her views on Jews have changed since she was 19.
Yup.
