Suggest some on-the-cheap things my wife and I can do in NYC this weekend.
So far, we’re thinking a walk through Central Park followed by heading to the Chelsea Brewing Company for dinner and a few cocktails later that evening. Other than that, we really don’t know what we want to do. We’re not in a position to drop a lot of money, so the cheaper the better. Wife’s not into touristy things like the Empire State Building and we took a Circle Line tour last year. I might be able to get her to the UN, but she’d be just as happy if we didn’t.
It’s been ages and I am really due for another NYC trip, but I used to like to walk around Chinatown and then across the street to Little Italy. Lots of nibbles to be had for a fair price as you wander, and certainly no lack of things to look at.
You might want to scan Village Voice on line to see what off off off off off Broadway shows there are, or other free events/street fairs/exhibits are on while you are there.
It is hard to be bored in NYC, but trying to stay on a budget can be tricky - though not impossible. Subways and buses are your friend.
Ponster and I were there this time last year - my first time in the States - it was warm and sunny. We ‘did’ the Central Park walk, also walked over the Brooklyn bridge, wandered round Statten Island but the best bit was … coming out of the Aquarium to witness a glorious sunset on Coney Island beach …
We were there for the beginning of the end of the marathon last year. We did see the wheelchair portion finish in Central Park, and whatshisface was doing that thing with the orange curtains. I think the frames were up, but he hadn’t made his “statement” quite yet. I could be misremembering that part, though.
The Brooklyn Museum of Art is much less expensive than the ones in Manhattan. Unless you are man enough to not give the ‘suggested’ donation. (I certainly can’t)
I believe the new and improved, with lemon fresh scent, MoMA has reduced admission on Fridays.
There is a great show that is on local cable here called $9.99 and it shows how to spend the day in NYC on 10 bucks.
Last year, there was a street festival that stretched on for blocks and blocks. I forget what street it was, but it was shut down except for intersecting traffic. There were vendors, food stands, etc. It was a beautiful day as I recall, and we enjoyed that. Is there something like that again this weekend?
I’ve recommended it before and I’ll do so now: Coney Island has a $5 “freak show” that involves about an hour of entertainment with a guy pounding nails into his head, a contortionist, a fire breather, and the like. Good times and good entertainment at a good price.
