A few years ago, I subscribed to the New York Times. I rarely read the paper, but it is handy as far as my Wordle and Connections stats are concerned. A-a-a-nyway, for the past couple of weeks, both of those games have been…inviting me to buy a family subscription, to allow three more logins.
Ummm, no? First of all, my household consists of just me. Secondly, what’s to stop me from just sharing my login information with other people anyway, as though I were a walking, talking version of bugmenotdotcom (a legacy website from the early 2000s that provided a bypass to access non-free websites. I think it’s gone by now. Haven’t checked it in ages)?
Family subscription means more money for the NYT owners, of course they are going to upsell. Having multiple profiles for games etc. is the only real benefit.
How do you get rid of the stupid nag about it at the top?? It takes up valuable screen space on my Spelling Bee and there’s no way to remove it. And, it seems to blink, disappear and come back frequently as I’m working on the Bee – so distracting.
I get the NYT mostly for the news as opposed to the games, and get the rock-bottom sub, which continually urges me to upgrade.
I’ve considered dropping mine and piggy-backing on my sister’s NYT account, but she’s been dropping her subs as political protests. In which case I’d just have to re-sub on my own so…. why not skip that step?
I have the NYT Family subscription, and love it. We have four avid newsies in this family and though we live far apart we can all have our own NYT subs without paying full price. If you can take advantage of it, this is a really good deal. (And of course, the people you share it with don’t have to actually be related to you.)
I have a NYT subscription that lets you add a three separate logins for free. I get Sunday home delivery and it’s not called a “family” subscription anywhere. Maybe online-only subs that have shared logins are called “family.” ??
Nothing - as long as they don’t play those games or want to know how long their streak is. I guess I have a family subscription - I don’t know, I’ve had two or three bonus logins for as long as I can remember , probably since digital subscriptions started. But that’s because I have a home delivery subscription. ( not by my choice). Some of the games can’t be played without logging in and if three people are trying to use the same log-in for a game, only the first will be able to play because it’s going to save your progress- if I get to my third word on my ipad and then switch to my phone, those previous guesses are going to show up on my phone. That’s why I revoked my sister’s login to give my husband one - otherwise one of us had to play without logging in , which you can’t do with every game.
