NYT Spelling Bee drives me crazy

In fairness that happens any old time you use it.

This is the first time ‘backbeat’ has come up. I’m thinking Sam is going to get a few emails.

I mean, leaving off ACKEE I could understand, but that one?

Today it is not taking EELING or EXIGENCE.

Swung and missed with CELLIE, ILEX, INCEL, INLINE, EXIGENCE and EXILIC today.
I really hate the whole Incel mindset so I’m glad that it’s not on the list.

It wouldn’t accept Cecil either today.

To make matters worse, it was accepted the first time it cropped up, in 2018. I’ve been trying it ever since and wondering why it got the boot.

Which is also why it didn’t take NEGGING.

This one is in keeping with the thread title. First it wasn’t a word, then it was a word, and now it’s not a word again.

Accepted: ANTIMONY

Not accepted: ANTINOMY

Still didn’t accept amnion (although it accepts amnio). Also myoma. My myectomy of a myoma in 1990 resents this omission.

Yesterday they took minion but not homophone minyan. Antisemites! (j/k)

It wouldn’t take TOMTOM yesterday.

No doubt because it’s hyphenated in whatever source dictionary their word list is based on. It certainly is in M-W.

I achieved the rare genius, no four letter words, no pangram today. I might go back and look for the pangram, but it’s not a necessity.

There are two pangrams today. I was surprised that both were accepted. I would have assumed one or the other, but not both.

I’m surprised that CUPID was accepted. That should be excluded for being a capitalized word.

Same. But hey, I guessed it and it took it.

TANNOY wasn’t accepted the other day, presumably because it’s 1) still a registered trademark (although often used in all lowercase as a generic name for PA systems), and 2) pretty exclusively British.

Even worse, one of them is a misspelling of the other and the other is an intentional respelling of the real word. Still I made QB since I could not imagine what else the other pangram could be.

I think alternate spelling rather than misspelling. I got them both because they’ve been used before with a different index letter. I had a vague memory of that so I tried them both. The only word I needed the hints for was the capitalized one I complained about upthread. Curiously, in the previous game with those pangrams, I got QB without using the hints at all, even though that word was in both.
