NYT Spelling Bee drives me crazy

I’m weirdly relieved I wasn’t the only one to try that…

Fortunately, that’s an acronym, so it’ll never be accepted.

That’s what they once said about LASER.

There are zillions of acronyms out there, but only a very small fraction of them have actually made it to wordhood. Somewhere around 10 or 12. No doubt more will in the future, but I doubt MAGA will be among them.

BULLYRAG would be a pangram in today’s puzzle, but it’s not accepted.

This demands an ARGY-BARGY! (hyphen duly noted)

Yeah, I tried that too. Gave up looking for the hyphen after a few minutes.

I tried YARG but it turns out it’s a proper name. But a tasty cheese nonetheless.

If billionth is a word, then nonillionth is a word.

Hear, hear!

Mysteriously, nonillionth was acceptable the first three times it came along, but has now been disallowed six times.

Makes no sense. Also, I’m surprised that word has only showed up 9 times, considering how many times I slapped my head for missing it.

Sunday - no KOFTA/KOFTE.

Or (less surprisingly) FLEEK.

You’re probably thinking of nonillion, not nonillionth. The latter is much rarer.

Today’s puzzle has only 69 total points. A pretty low total. Checking my log, there was one with only 47 points on 27 March 2023. That might be the record.

Today’s took me only around 40 minutes or so to finish, although that’s no where near my quickest QB.

Ah, of course. Sorry.

It is. The pangram was MORTIFY. The second lowest was 50 (BULWARK.)

But it did have LATKE, although I had to try it three times to get the spelling they wanted.

I admit there were two words that stumped me today: PLENUM and PEPLUM.

On the other hand, I had no luck trying either NEUME or LUMPEN.

I got the first one, but had no clue on the second one. Got it only by random guessing after looking at the clues.

Not sure how I knew the first one was a word.

It still doesn’t work, after trying it five or six times.
