I wondered the same thing. I would swear that it’s been rejected in the past, but apparently today was the first time it was a possible word.
As for TONTINE, I learned that word from the Bee. And after ten appearances, it’s now been axed. It makes you wonder if they have an actual system or sometimes they just forget.

This must be the easiest SB so far. Looking at the Buddy, 80% of solvers got the very hardest word. That’s almost always below 50%, sometimes far below 50%.
Maybe five minutes to QB. Easiest ever. I very quickly got everything but the pangram and knew that it would very likely give me QB once I found it.
Yeah, I got to Genius without the pangram, so I only had two words left when I took a look at the Buddy. They fell quickly.
Yep, I got it all quickly, but am almost embarassed at how long it took me to see the pangram, considering I kept wanting to try chicory.
Still no CAVITATE, but we still get those stupid Spanish pumpkin seeds.
Also, no capacitive (spoiled because it’s close to other words).
I was flummoxed when it didn’t accept PECCAVI, thinking it had been allowed in the past, but then I realized it was familiar because it’s a doper username.
