O.C. May Rename Its Airport After Lame Fox Show

Orange County Considers Calling Airport ‘The O.C.’

:smack:
What in the happy fuck are they thinking? It’s a fricking airport, not a sex playground! Is the idea here that someone in New York will think “Well, I couldn’t decide between a vacation in California or Aruba, but a chance to see The O.C. sealed the deal”? What’s next? Will Denver County be renaming their outdoor ampitheater “Method & Red Rocks”?

Yeah, it’d be tragic if they tacked on a name from show business, replacing…a name from show business.

They’d better not fuck with John Wayne Airport.
It is still John Wayne right?

Ew. There is a difference between naming something after a “legend” and naming something after some flavor of the week television show just so the kids will think it’s hip and edgy and whatnot.

Why the hell does an airport need to be cool anyway? It’s an airport. “I am not gonna fly outta Orange County cos their airport has such a lame name.”

Shouldn’t that be, “I am soooooo not gonna fly outta Orange County cos, like, their airport has such a lame name.”?

Doesn’t “O.C.” stand for “Orange County”? So technically, wouldn’t the name of the airport be “The Orange County Airport”? What’s so offensive about that?

Yeah. There’s some radio station around here that has a little tagline thing about how they’re broadcasting in “L.A. and the O.C.”

The thing is, in my experience, nobody in Orange County ever calls it “the O. C.” If it were a popular nickname around here, then I could understand. But you’re most likely to hear “behind the Orange Curtain” than “the O. C.”

Dude thinks he’s James Dean. C’mere, young feller. Closer, I want to whisper something to you. YOU’RE NOT!

Orange County has always been rather ill in the head, I say. Heck, these folks think having the Richard Nixon Library there is an honor!

That’s…just…wrong.

There is no airport in Orange County (or anywhere else I know) called John Wayne Airport. It is a widely-held myth.

It is The John Wayne Airport. It is listed alphabetically under “T” sort of like filing El Salvador under “E.”

Can I just point out the amusing irony of your location line at the moment?

You might want to let them know that, because their web site (www.ocair.com) refers to it as just “John Wayne Airport,” the airport’s logo reads “John Wayne Airport,” the message you get when you call the information line says “Welcome to John Wayne Airport,” the maps all say “John Wayne Airport,” and pretty much all the copy in the airport’s marketing text says “John Wayne Airport,” no article.

[nitpick]City and County of Denver[/nitpick]. And, no, we goes for the money out here. It would be renamed “The Pepsi Stage at Coors Ampitheatre at Red Rocks.”

Well, it was just one politician who wanted to rename the airport and he was pretty much ridiculed and the suggestion was shelved immediately.

My question is, do people from 'The O.C." refer to it as “The O.C.”? And, when they get asked what “The O.C.” means, do they then say, " The Orange County"? That “The” really pisses me off.

Of course, I’m stuck here in Atlanta, and often hear local radio and other people refer to it as ‘ATL’ or “The ATL”. Nothin’ cooler than calling your town after the airport designation, is there?

They SHOULD change the name of the airport. That way when the show is off the air in 2 years everybody will be reminded of how stupid they were to jump on a non-existant bandwagon.

They better not take down the big statue of John Wayne they have inside the airport. It’s the one classy thing in “the O.C.”

I think the idea of calling it the O.C. comes from the bizarre practice (to my ears, anyway) of calling all the highways the 210 and the 5 and the 101.

Never heard of this O.C. show. Doesn’t sound like I’m missing much. I do agree that changing the name of the airport from that of a film legend to the name of a fad TV show would be a boneheaded move–kind of like changing the name of an airport to that of a former mayor because he’s dead and he was black (but that’s another rant).

If they’re going to change the name of John Wayne airport, they should go with something like the “Terrifying Takeoff Terminal” or something (it’s not really terrifying to me, but Im going for alliteration).
