That is hilarious! I’ve never heard that story, and I grew up in Sonoma County, even. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Kyla!
That was really a Snopes whoosh, click on the “More information about this page” link.
Just Snopes educating people on being careful about falling for the False Authority Syndrome.
I don’t have time to read this thread now. Just wanted to pop in and say that the moment I saw Obama standing in front of an “odd-looking” flag (sorry about that, Ohio), the fruitcakes would go nuts.
We need to forget about fluoridating the nation’s water supplies and start spiking them with lithium instead.
Geez, that’s sneaky of Snopes.
Now I feel foolish.
No, the burgee not a redesign. It’s the only state flag Ohio has ever had, adopted in 1902.
It was based on cavalry flags.
I believe that Ohio and Nepal are the only sovereign jurisdictions that have non-rectangular flags.
49?
CMC +fnord!
I appreciate the creative work you did. I’m also impressed that you were able to display the resulting flag to the right of the text in your post.
Burgee! Thank you, that was the word I was thinking of. I knew it was naval, and completely blanked.
How interesting! Very modern design. I like it. New Mexico is better, but I do like it.
I think the woosh traveled at 88mph, and aruvqan was unlucky enough to be holding a flux capacitor. At least he’ll be able to correct his mistake the second time around.
I live in Alabama, and I like the state flag, although I think the original Cross of Burgundywith the thorns on the side of it is better, though. The state seal, on the other hand, is hideous.
Also, this is the first time I’ve seen it, but Maryland’s flag isn’t that bad. New York’s is much worse.

Here in Nevada, we were so tired after all the fighting, we just went for the standard blue with a small bumper sticker in the corner.
Oh, and yeah… Lib, this is prolly the best whoosh yet seen on this board. Grats to both you and aruvqan.
Wow do I feel stupid. At least the magnitude of my woosh won’t stand out too much in this thread!
I thought the Bill Maher reference would be a dead giveaway.
Lib,
I (and others no doubt) appreciate what you’ve been doing with your Obama threads – in fact, I think it’s very clever to jump the right-wing gun (so to speak) by attacking Obama with ridiculous arguments and exposing those arguments for their inanity before the usual suspects can regurgitate their Hannity talking points.
That being said, you’ve found a innocent casualty here. Put the poor guy out of his misery.
Nitpick: Ohio isn’t a sovereign jurisdiction.
I actually like the Maryland flag. You kids don’t know what you are talking about. When I lived in Alabama all we got was a white piece of cloth and you went in the yard and poked yourself with a stick until you could bleed enough to make the red X on it and we liked it! You don’t appreciate the flag, what with its fancy colors and designs. Damn kids today.
I like how it looks a bit like a traffic accident.
What’s up with the hat-on-a-stick motif? I don’t think I’ve ever noticed that before, but now here it is on two flags.
Oh, it’s a hat. I thought she found something in a parking lot. Looks like an old condom to me.
That’s the Phrygian cap, AKA the “liberty cap”. The U.S. Army uses it as well.
