Sir Edmund Hillary is on the NZ $5 note, and has been for many years. He didn’t die until earlier this year, so there’s certainly a precedent for putting living people on currency.
Also, Queen Elizabeth II is on the currency of the UK and several Commonwealth countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Fiji, and The Bahamas, although that’s not quite the same thing.
In the US, though, there is not. In fact, wildlife depicted on US coins and currency are immediately killed and made into a delicious stew after their images are cast, so as not to break this tradition.
I just read my entire link and lo and behold, it’s Roosevelt on the dime; I thought it was Eisenhower. Sorry about that. Haven’t had change in my pocket in a long time. I’m rethinking the whole idea of the Obama dime now. Maybe they can revive the twenty cent piece and put him on that.
I should note that I don’t necessarily think he will be a great president, just that it’s clear to me that he will be VIEWED as a great president, regardless (almost) of what he does.
Sort of like Kennedy.
I just want to be recognized as first in predicting his (more or less) permanent likeness on our official US currency; though I will likely be dead before it happens.
I’ll make the prediction that before 2108 he will make it.
