Note that I have obliquely referred to certain people as “thugs,” but those people most certainly were not “people who support taxes”–they were “people who gloat about the fact that I pay more taxes than them and the government will use the money for things I find illegitimate.” I have never said anything even remotely resembling “taxes are theft.”

It has to do with the *relevance *of half of people paying no FIT. If that equated to half the money spent, that would be impressive. However, if it was something ridiculously tiny, it would cease to have any relevance at all, even for people who might consider such things in their deliberations. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle.

So, three points:
1.) The 47% statistic includes both people who have low incomes and those who have enough “credits, deductions and exemptions,” which could include people with fairly high incomes. There’s no data to tell us how many fall into the latter group.
2.) As has been pointed out, the vast majority of people who pay no FIT pay *some *other taxes. In fact, I can’t imagine someone who would manage to never pay any tax. Maybe in a state with no sales tax, but even then.
3.) FIT apparently contributes somewhat less than half of all money the government brought in, which is also less than what it’s currently spending.
One of the biggest lessons I think we can be taking away here is how completely skewed income is becoming in this country. Yes, it’s ridiculous that “the top 10 percent of earners – households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 – paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.” But where you look at that and say, “We need to lower taxes on the rich!” I say, “We need to fix the gap between the highest and lowest earners!”

Bernanke was talking about the importance of making the tax system fair and equitable while considering how much revenue is needed.
