Purely a populist move. The Scandinavians really love Obama. His utter failure to change any of the policies of Bush seems to have been ignored.
They are awarding Obama for the military build up in Afghanistan. Peace through superior firepower.
Everyone’s forgetting his successful mediation of the Henry Louis Gates conflict.
Then give it to George Washington, or Thomas Jefferson. Or the voters, like that Time magazine stunt.
Shouldn’t the prize be given then to Madison, Hamilton et. al.?
Another vote for “Huh?” Unless he got the award for not nuking Rio after they were awarded the 2016 Olympics, I don’t get it.
I think the world is just relieved a President of the empire has been in power for 9 months and not invaded anywhere new.
The committee for the Peace Nobel Price has officially jumped the shark.
I like Obama as much as the next guy but this is mind bogglingly stupid, Obama has great potential for doing things worthy of the price (and also for FUBARing in a grand scale), but so far he hasn’t done anything deserving it.
He should refuse it and tell the committee members, in the kindest possible terms, to lay down that bong and start taking their position seriously.

I have to say, it’s good to see that most Obama supporters (at least here) seem to see through the stupidity of this decision and are not letting their judgment get swayed by their admiration for the President. But I do not think this message board is representative of the public. Already on Facebook, I see people’s status updates proclaiming their great joy at this decision.

Another thing: Nominations were due Feb 1! So somebody was impressed by Obama’s body of work from January 21-31. A big ten days for him!

I’m always saying the guy doesn’t deserve a 1/1000th of the vitriol the right spews at him because he hasn’t had enough time to do anything worth getting angry about.
The same goes for adulation.
I hope he declines the award diplomatically (hehehe).
He would have deserved the Noble Prize if in day one of his presidency he had said “We are bringing our troops tomorrow”.
I take by this thread that before his presidency he didn’t do anything particularly relevant for peace. Right?
I think he had declared that he would shut down Guantanamo and give everyone there a proper trial.
Of course, I’m not sure that he has yet done this.
In terms of bizarre it’s certainly not far behind that peace freak Kissinger’s award in 1973.
