Why not? He has plenty of experience in Washington and was a major driving force in pushing Universal Heath Care during Clinton’s administration, he didn’t succeed, but it doesn’t mean he hasn’t learned anything. Universal Heath Care is on top of Obama’s priorities, why wouldn’t he want a guy that’s been there done that?
Wilson has always been a staunch republican. He only started talking to the dems when they threw him and then his wife under a bus.
Cite? In his book, he came across as resolutely non-partisan, which is how he remained in government service through so many different administrations.
Looking at his policies, you’re right, he does have a very good, imho, strong left, social/domestic record. It’s the few blemishes on his record that he does have that really stick out to me however. First off he supported the supported the war, but to be fair he has some strong votes in favor of bringing it to an end. My biggest issue with him however, is with his votes to a)make the Patriot Act permanent and b) voted against telecom immunity. These two issues were also my biggest complaints about Obama(note: BO didn’t vote to make it permanent, but for its reauthorization when he pledged to repeal it); their immunity votes were the same.
I also take issue with the way he actedin regards to Howard Dean’s ‘50 state strategy’.
Mixed feelings. He is not as bad as I had originally thought, again, I do really like his social platform, and I actualy like the fact that he can be a real pitbull. I have supported Obama all the way through his campaign (DK was my top pick fwiw), though I have for near as long been fairly wary about just how far to the right his foreign policy/homeland security positions go. I’m by no means devastated by the pick, in fact I really get it for the most part, I am just a bit disappointed that the pick does not appear to be as progressive on the security side as it is on the social.
Secretary of State: Bill Richardson
Secretary of Defense: Adm. Fox Fallon
I saw several interviews with him saying he and wife were lifelong repubs and contributors.
Sounds like Obama’s first pick been announced or leaked out, since I thought they wanted to make the Treasury pick first.
Everybody’s reporting that Eric Holder has been chosen as Attorney General. Holder was a Deputy AG for Clinton, and since everybody else is saying it, it should be noted that he would be the first African-American U.S. Attorney General.
This Wikipedia article on the Obama transition includes a table (updated as needed, I presume) of announced appointees to date. Hillary Clinton will be SoS. (I would’ve expected her to stay in the Senate by her own choice.)
Good choice, I guess, but I was so hoping for Ralph Nader. ![]()
I, uh, hope you didn’t read what I said about that in the other thread.
Looks like Richardson will get Commerce for now as a consolation prize. Wouldn’t be surprised at some point if Clinton goes on to other things and Richardson becomes Sec State.
Yeah, that’s an unfortunate choice. More drug war for everyone!

Really really abysmal choice.
Change? Yeah right.
Actually for someone who says he wants to renegotiate NAFTA, taking a border Governor with foreign policy experience for commerce isn’t such a terrible idea.
So who’s it going to be for Interior? The only name I heard whispered is Raul Grijalva, but he seems unlikely to me.
Obama has asked Gates to stay on, at least temporarily, as Sec Def.
He’s also reported to ask Gen. James Jones (US Army, Retired) to be his National Security Adviser.
Nobel Prize-winning physicist Stephen Chu will reportedly be nominated for Energy Department secretary, and former Clinton EPA head Carol Browner will be appointed to a new climate post. While I’m not familiar with either, Chu is certainly not one of the Washington insiders people have been complaining about, and it’ll be interesting to see how people respond to that choice.
The author of the linked article does not share your conclusion.
Looks like change to me.
And the head of the EPA is…
Lisa Jackson, formerly Jon Corzine’s chief of staff. I don’t know a thing about her, I don’t need to know a thing about her. All I want to say is “Phew!”
Also, deputy LA Mayor Nancy Tutley will be in charge of the WH Council on Environmental Quality, which I think is a new group.
