I heard that John Kerry, Bill Richardson and some other guy I can’t remember were on the short list for Sec of State. I am afraid John Kerry would bore the tears out of other world leaders. Also, I saw him on a news clip the other day and his face was all shiny and angular like Kryten from Red Dwarf so it’s now obvious that he’s an android.
Duckworth might end up being Obama’s replacement in the Senate. The Illinois politics insider I know (OK, it’s tygre) thinks it’ll be between her and Lisa Madigan. Unless Governor Hot Rod “4% approval rating” Blagojevich appoints himself, which would be an act of chutzpah large enough to make the entire state explode in seething rage.
Not to mention that IIRC it’s only a short-term appointment and a special election would have to be held to elect the person to fill out the rest of the term? Because no one would vote Blagojevich back in and he’d still swiftly be out of a job.
I’ve heard rumors that Madigan would at least get her out of his hair but I doubt he has much hope for his political career after this, regardless.
BTW, I put down the wrong person for my Secretary of Education vote, I should have gone for Paul Vallas. However, that article mentions the possibility of him running for IL governor, so - President-Elect Obama, please don’t pick him!
(Memo to Judy Baar Topinka: I would have voted for you except you picked a waaaay conservative running mate. I’m sorry, I now regret voting for this guy again, but you didn’t give me much choice.)
Just dawned on me that she should be made Ambassador to Russia. She wouldn’t even have to move. She could work from her backyard, maybe build a bridge or something.
I want Christie Todd Whitman back at the EPA both because it would be a fine way to reach across the aisle, and because because it would be a polite but unmistakeable way to give the finger to the outgoing incumbent.
Senator Clinton should stay where she is. She needs a fairly independent power base for her last shot at the presidency in 8 years, and attempting to take that away from her would result in bad feelings.
I think Richardson would be great as Sec. of State, and word on the street here in NM is that he’s a likely candidate.
Gore heading up the EPA.
I doubt it’ll happen but it would be nice to see Jeff Bingaman, also a New Mexican, at either Energy or HHS. I think he’s too liberal for that to fly, but I can dream.
Oooh, I hadn’t heard that Vallas was thinking of another shot at IL governor. He’d be a good candidate – Rod would lose in a primary against just about anyone now though, lol.
I too am embarassed at voting for him. Twice. /cowers I just could NOT bring myself to vote for Topinka, though.
Dunno on Madigan. Rumor has it she’s considering a governor run too and would be unlikely to take the Senate seat since it might impact that. I’d LOVE to see Tammy Duckworth in the Senate. She could do a lot of good.
Sorry, but we just worked really hard to get her re-elected as governor, and we don’t want to lose her. Not because she’s a great governor, she isn’t – Locke was vastly superior, and Gregoire was a better state AG than she has been as guv. But that asshole Rossi came way too close to swiping the office, and now that we’ve secured it, we want to hold onto it for a little while.
Also, there’s a GD thread on this subject, in which somebody suggested Patrick Fitzgerald as AG. I really, really like that idea.
I don’t go to GD… too much obscurantism in there*, but I agree with the Patrick Fitzgerald choice as well. If a governor leaves office for a presidential appointment who takes over?
I agree Rossi would be a disaster but Gregoire isn’t much better. I think she’d be much better at AG than governor. I just wish we had a Locke-like candidate in the wings.
