Obama's Harvard transcript - an issue?

Yes, because I SAY fucking so. I guess you missed the IMO part. I think any presidential canditate/politician that won’t release a record besides obviously the most private ones ain’t gaining any trust of mine. It ain’t a deal killer but certainly isn’t gaining any points with me either.
Its obvious that YOU didnt go to Harvard because you can’t read for shit.

Can you name the last Presidential candidate that released his or her college transcripts? Where are Sarah Palin’s?

What is it you don’t trust? That he went to Harvard or that he got decent grades? Or maybe you think he majored in Kill Whitey?

And what does his academic background have anthing to do with his stance on any political issues?

Just more pathetic attempts to discredit Obama’s legitimacy as President rather than debate the merits of his policies.

Complete BS. If he releases his college transcripts, they will ask for high school, then grade school.
You jerks bleated over his birth certificate and that was not good enough for you. Many still pretend it was not good enough. This would be the same. He does not owe you a thing. What will you righties dream of next. You are making shit up to rally bigots. It works very well.

Calm down, son. Let me disabuse you of a few concepts.

I didn’t bleat over anything, least of all his birth certificate.

Also, I’m not a righty.

I accept your apology in advance.

Finally, your slippery slope argument is about as weak of one as it gets; there’s a difference between the transcripts, which I linked to (summaries) of for Bush, Gore, and Kerry, and a 4th grade field trip permission slip or whatever strawman you want to dig up next.

The fact remains, it’s not entirely unreasonable to ask for them. Even though he’s your guy, I’m sure you realize that that’s true. I suspect you’d want to see W’s.

If he doesn’t reveal them, it looks like a coverup. You know it, and I know it.

I’m going to weigh in and say this stuff is a complete non-issue.

I specifically mentioned Michigan (and University of Texas–I didn’t mention Berkeley) because they are very respected public, state universities. Basically to illustrate that if there “is” some sort of pinnacle of academic institutions, it’s a lot bigger than a handful of schools in the mid atlantic/northeast.

gonzomax, you can criticize groups if you want, including groups that Dopers belong to. But if you’re talking about a group of people that includes Dopers please don’t post direct insults like “you jerks.”

Well, I can certainly understand you getting Harlem and Morningside Heights mixed up with Lake Cayuga. Very similar.

To be fair, she’s working on it, but only has them from 18 of the 20 colleges she went to.

Given that he was editor of the Law Review (which was covered in the Times at the time) anyone who questions his academic record at the Law School either doesn’t understand what that means or is stirring up trouble for no reason. Perhaps Obama is following the very reasonable policy of DNFTT.

Imagine a Warner Brothers cartoon, with Obama as Bugs, and Elmer standing in for a Republican (sorry, Wepublican.)
Elmer: I want to see your wecords, and I want to see them now.
Bugs: Takes a mallet hidden behind him and smashes Elmer. “What a maroon.”

Recently released, FOIA.

Page 38. Not directly related to this specific note, but I figure it’s worth mentioning.

I have no doubt that his records will show that he rocked, else he wouldn’t have been made editor (unless affirmative action is way out of control, which is what I suspect the Republica… sorry, forgot i was on the SDMB… the pubbies/fucktards believe happened and want to try to use to shame him).

He can end this with one phone call. He’s silly, from a political standpoint, not to squash this issue, since it will only be a distraction and he needs all the focus he can get to fight the coming beatdown this Nov.

Is it a matter of principle? Or is there something really embarrassing in there? He’s the only one who can prove one way or the other. Until he does, and to answer the OP, yes it’s an issue, and a war of choice. Not a smart move, for a guy who I thought was a master at this sort of thing.

Someone should tell them to replace that ‘1’ key on their typewriter.

Sometimes there are battles that, as a public figure, you don’t fight, because, by fighting them, you legitimize them. This isn’t an issue that’s sparked much public interest. The only people who are upset about the President not releasing his college transcripts are his political enemies, and if he releases them, they’re not going to stop being his political enemies, they’re just going to move on to something else to be upset at him for. It puts me, at least, in mind of the birth certificate kerfuffle, when, after the President posted a copy of his birth certificate online, the people claiming he wasn’t a citizen didn’t say, “Sorry, I guess you are a citizen after all”, but instead complained that it was a certification of live birth, or questioned its authenticity, or moved on to a grade school application his stepfather filled out that stated President Obama was an Indonesian citizen.

There are other battles the President can fight and needs to fight if he wants to improve his electoral chances, but this isn’t one of them.

A bunch of his political opponents are going around making themselves look like crackpots, and putting his more mainstream opponents in a position to either offend the crackpots (and lose their votes) or cater to them (and lose the votes of sensible people). Why the hell would he ever want to “end” that?

In the words of Napoleon, “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

Maybe so, but in my mind, the real danger isn’t whether the crackpots or conservatives or teapartiers (or if you’re 12, teabaggers) turn against his party and their policies. It’s whether the independents do; indeed, they have already started (not necessarily over this issue, I grant).

If something like this gets traction, or even turns into the camel’s back-breaking straw, it only hurts him. A really dumb risk in my opinion, especially if it’s just over principal. If it’s over substance…

It’s not going to get traction. It’s too stupid.

What’s next? The idea that Obama should respond to right wing ululations is absurd. He owes them nothing. He has a lot of important duties to perform. He does not have to waste time dealing with right wing loonies.
Does the right wing want to see Obama’s fathers transcripts next? How about his mothers? Why would he hide them ? It is a witch hunt on a lower level but still similar to the Starr Panel investigating Clinton. It is a waste of time and trouble.

What other President has released his college transcripts anyway? I know that a couple have been made public, but they were found by other means, not released by the Presidents in question.

Even if Obama did realease his Harvard transcripts, the wingnuts would just say they were forgeries anyway.
