I’m a bit tape delayed, but at this point I give it a B-. And I’m being generous. This is a rally cry to the faithful, not a reaching out to the undecided. I don’t want to hear about Bush or McCain-- I want to hear about Obama. Maybe it’ll get better…
The race has been defined. It is Obama against McCain. That is who is is running against . That is who he has to compare himself and his programs to.
It is at the democratic convention and you wonder why he is rallying the faithful. He wants them to go out and work for him regardless of who they supported before.
I really liked the part about the troops not fight/dying for a Red America or a Blue America. For me, that would be the high point. I’ll upgrade him to a B, but the content doesn’t match the emotional passion. When he spelled out exactly what he was going to do, it sounded like a stale regurgitation of what every politician says they’re going to do when they get elected.
I thought it was an excellent speech that covered all the bases needed. He made it clear he will hit back when he needs to and won’t allow the opposition to get away with the tired old canard that if you disagree with the Republicans that makes you an America hater.
I don’t see any way McCain will come close to delivering a speech that good much less better.
If I were a die-hard Obama supporter, I’d probably thing it was a great speech. But I’m a weak Obama supporter, and it just didn’t speak to me. He’s going to close tax loopholes, tax the rich, and try to prevent companies from shipping jobs overseas. Never heard that before… Oh, and energy independence in 10 years? That must be one of the dreams of his father. Everytime he mentioned McCain being in the Senate for how-ever-many years, I wanted to ask him about Biden, who has been eeven longer. Like I said earlier-- lots of passion, but not much content.
John what do you want from the man??? Good God he covered every single point the pubbies have thrown at him, point by point and then smacked John McCain! What eles do you want? And I don’t care who you are, that speech was awesome!
It did everything I could have wanted as a democrat and an Obama supporter - Fuck Kool-Aid Obama was brilliant!
AK-47s, mentioned by name as rhetorical device, are not commonly available on the streets of Cleveland as suggested because they are full-automatic weapons and thus fall under the control of the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Firearm Owners Protection Act (Hughes Amendment provision) of 1986. What he was probably referring to was a semi-automatic rifle that looks like an AK-47, which, according to FBI crime statistics, has little to do with crime (being a so-called “assault weapon”).
I really, really wish that one of these guys could get it right, just one time. I’ll leave that alone now that my objection has been noted, there’s no need to hijack this thread into that area and I don’t want to cause that to happen.
I also can’t stand the “fat cat” rhetoric that is thrown around when taxes are discussed. He made bold assertions about cutting taxes across the board for middle-class people, which will necessarily increase taxes on the “wealthy”, not all of which actually are wealthy even as they make more than most. I think he’ll have a hell of a time getting those policies passed. Frankly, I don’t think he’ll be able to do it. And that’s OK, politicians rarely are able to follow through on promises, be it intentional disregard or opposition intransigence. If he tries, I wish him luck.
Most of my other objections are minor at best, and aren’t really worth getting into. He and I don’t agree on much except for the necessity of change. I’ve had enough of Republicans, it’s time for the Democrats to have a shot at it. Let’s see if they can do better.
It was reassuring to hear him address our energy and AGW concerns realistically. It takes a lot for a democrat to propose using more nuclear power. It was good to hear the phrase clean coal. I thought he was brave even bringing up abortion and gay rights.
Like you John Mace, I thought the highlight was the Red America or a Blue America part.
On Preveiw: I believe he said a goal of 10 years to no longer import Middle East oil, not energy independence. This goal, might have an outside shot, though I doubt it too. Energy Independence would include not buying power from Canada. I doubt that. that is part of his goal.
The speech was okay. I’m afraid that as a Broncos’ fan it’ll be the most exciting thing I see in Invesco for the rest of the year. And I have to admit that the film about Obama on the Daily Show was much better than the real one before his speech.
Great speech, B+ or A-. It was more political than most of his speeches, but it was very effective. Most importantly, he conveyed the strength and competence people expect in a president.
->McCain and the Republicans - You’re not the only people who love America.
I think Obama really came out swinging on every issue. Some people said Biden wasn’t enough of an attack dog last night. Well, there is plenty of time for that.
But tonight, Obama took it to McCain without reservation ot hesitation.
I am with you on Obama, I plan to vote for him. I look forward to it, but it was not a great speech, it was merely a very good speech. Far better than any ever delivered by McCain or Bush but not even Obama’s best.
Some great speeches at this convention, but Obama’s was the most awe inspiring speech I’ve ever heard since Churchill. I can’t wait to watch CNN report on the news during his administration.
