Anyone ever written a Jack/Warnie fanfic?
Uh, you’re not asking that for me, and probably not for **GythaOgg **either. I don’t care where he’s finding incest fanfiction and am not interested in learning which sites have the most. I was simply pointing out that he seems to be exaggerating how common this sort of thing is, and that it should be easy enough to avoid incest stories.
I think some of you folks need to start finding your fic in places other than FF.net and anything with the word “wad” in the domain name. Either that or the ficcers I’ve known the last decade are the rarefied adults in the game, I don’t know. Maybe the fact that we all wisely hauled away from LiveJournal at earliest opportunity was indicative of something.
You know, Qin Shi Huangdi, you’ve got a habit of starting threads by slightly overinterpreting things you’ve read about. You started this thread by noticing that there is some fan fiction about The Chronicles of Narnia that involve incest. You didn’t do a thorough search of all Narnia fan fiction to see how common that was, nor did you do an investigation into fan fiction to find out how common taboo-breaking sexual exploits were in fan fiction. You just asked if there was obvious connection between Lewis and incest. When the discussion slowed down a little bit, you then quoted a not particularly good book about Narnia (yes, really, The Magical Worlds of Narnia isn’t a scholarly treatise on Lewis but only something intended for children who have juat finished the series) and asked if Lewis showed his racism in his books, although the only real citation is to a letter from well before most of his books were written.
Perhaps you should slow down a little bit and think about the claims you make in your OP’s before you post them. Perhaps you should do some research yourself on the topics. Perhaps it’s not necessary to post so often and start threads so often.
I think, especially in light of a later mention of fandom_secrets, which is a Livejournal community (basically a collaborative blog), kushiel is mostly talking about Livejournal-based fandom, which has an overwhelming female majority. And fandom_secrets tends to be the scene of a lot of fighting and pettiness, so the points in kushiel’s post don’t represent the overall fandom experience in my opinion. There are also indeed a number of people who like to think they’re very edgy or very enlightened, and there’s social capital attached to calling out other people for being less enlightened than you. It’s why I stay away from fandom_secrets.
In any case, I think GythaOgg’s post that said fanfic is about exploring paths the source material doesn’t touch on got it spot-on. It’s not all erotic, but plenty of it is, and as far as I can tell that’s just another example of wondering how the characters in a work like The Chronicles of Narnia would respond in a situation that doesn’t appear in the books. I don’t really take the view that there’s anything sick and perverted about writing erotic fiction based on non-erotic works. Most humans just like thinking about sex. It’s biology. And fanfic is fantasy. You don’t have to think sibling incest is all happy fluffy bunnies to write a story where you pretend it is just for fun.
Anyone wanting some fairly serious scholarly information on fanfiction and fandom should probably start with The Organization for Transformative Works, a scholarly body that, among other things, publishes a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the study of fanfiction. They own a fanfic archive, and are involved in efforts to preserve print fanzines. They’re worth taking a look at.
There are three journaling services that host the majority of fanfiction on such services; LiveJournal, JournalFen, and Dreamwidth. Dreamwidth is the newcomer, but the owners are some of the people who run OTW, and many fans have migrated their fanfiction journals there based on the strength of that.
On FanFiction.net. While there might not be a large percentage there are still dozens, especially if one notes that many of them aren’t listed as “pairings”.
“Not a large percentage” is pretty different from “a majority”, which is what you said in the OP. I see that FanFiction.Net has over 8,000 Narnia stories, so even if “dozens” of them involve incest then that’s less than 1%. Sticking to K -> T rated stories, which is the default search anyway, should exclude anything with explicit sexual content (incestuous or not).
Fanfiction.net is not very highly regarded by the large majority of fanfic writers - it’s frequently referred to as ‘The Pit’ or ‘The Pit of Voles’ and widely derided as a place where only poor-quality works can be found; that’s the reputation it has. Because of this, it’s not particularly representative, though it’s more popular in some fandoms than in others. It’s worth noting that ff.net’s TOS bans anything sexually explicit completely, and most of it’s usership is young teens who can’t get access to archives that allow explicit materials. This skews the content considerably to marysues, self-inserts, etc etc etc.
If you google the term ‘pit of voles’, the first hit is directly to ff.net, which is amusing.
Huh. I thought it was just free space to host my fics.
In order to be offended apparently.
A motto for the ages. ![]()
I’m reminded of the old Geek Hierarchy chart(I’m guessing most folks have seen this).
Or Spock’s parents, or… well, once you get into Trek with its “aliens are humans with funny noses” then it’s all over the place. And I am interested in seeng a reply from Qin Shi Huangdi as to whether this inter-sapient-species relationship stuff is disturbing / offensive (and if so, why).
So you and GythaOgg seem to be suggesting that in order for **Qin ** to be offended by these stories he had to go digging to find the material? ![]()
Why apologize? That’s probably the least sick thing in the entire thread. And mildly funny to boot.
Neither Denise Paolucci or Mark Smith, the owners of Dreamwidth, have anything to do with the OTW other than being supporters. I’m pretty sure that Denise doesn’t even post her own fic on the OTW’s fanfic archive Archive Of Our Own, affectionately known as AO3. (And Mark isn’t involved in fannish endeavors like fic at all, that I know, he’s more a gamer.)
I stand corrected. Thank you!
There’s probably more though on adultfanfiction.net
looks through the catagories
Oh dear god, 101 DALMATIONS!!! BLUE’S CLUES!!!
curls up in a little ball, rocking back and forth
Quoth Apollyon:
I already mentioned Sarek and Amanda. Of course, there are plenty of other Trek pairings, but I wanted to get a good sampling of pairings from a variety of works.
Hey now…I’ve made up lots of…private…fanfic about Joe…
Joe?! You are sick!
Steve is much cuter.
Drat, missed that, sorry. Somehow though the whole Trek alien-miscegenation thing seems to never get a squawk of outrage (or at least IME)… which I find interesting when people start fussing about furries in Second Life or whatever.
Or, in the spirit of the OP’s original complaint: Joe-slash-Steve? ![]()
Most of this stuff is parody crafted by the writers to freak out their friends.
