Obscure Claims to Fame

I have only one…

My grandfather used to run a company which made parts for NASA. On a piece which went to, and is still on, the moon, in really tiny letters, he carved “I love [Bob’s initials]”.

(At least he says he did. I know the company made parts for NASA, anyway.)

My first brush came back when I was in 6th Grade. My friend’s mom was a travel agent and her firm sponsored a travelogue on the local public radio station. They were doing a spot on different customs for Christmas and New Year’s in different country. I got to do the exotic Scots!
It must have been heard by close to 100 people.

Next came my great television acting debut. This was around '82 or '83. Again, thanks to the benefit of public broadcasting. I played a long haired kid (no stretch at all) who was a halfway house inhabitant who nodded his head with great understanding when the lead actress read her “Break through” poem. I had to be one for a good 45 seconds! I did get paid for three hours work. A grand total of $10.50!

I was also on the local version of the High School quiz bowl as a junior and senior. We only got about three rounds in each year, but it was fun. They always asked what your plans were after HS, if we had made it to the Finals we going to each say we were going to study abroad in various countries, except for our lone female member. She was supposed to say she was going to study a guy. God, we were so funny.

I also had a HS basketball game stopped for about 5 minutes. Why, you ask? Because I scored for the other team and they had to figure out who last touched the ball for the other team to give him credit for a basketball!
