I have the type of Schlage Locks that you are able to re-key without removing it.
I want to re-key everything and need 5 or so identical new keys. The keymaker place at Ace, can’t just make a random key, they have to be able to copy something.
Do I have to buy a new, unneeded lock just to get the included key pattern?
If it is for your home I will assume it is a 5 pin “C”. All the lock smith needs is the pin numbers. If you are rekeying to a new key and the lock is not going to be submastered to any key system the lock smith can pick any numbers with in reason and cut a new key
He then should take a blank key put it in his Blue key cutting machine and cut a new key. Then taking the old key remove the core repin it to the new pins. reinstall and you are dne.
Rereading I am not sure what you mean by rekeying it without removing it? Is your lock an interchangable core type of lock? If it is he will need a key cut to the present pinning so he can first make a change key. Which is used to remove the core to be repinned. dDo you know which keyway you have?
Ok after looking at the link I remember a little about this lock. to cut a new key you will have to go to a locksmith. ACE or a hardware store will only have a key copy machine.
So your choices are get an key from someone else, buy a new lock, or see if a locksmith will cut a new key. But I am not surre the ssecurekey uses standard pins.
