People seem to not remember or know that the union made contract concessions in 1999 to get this scheduling power. The articles I read said it was a 2% pay cut but in this CBC article ATU VP Randy Graham says they gave up a 12 hour spread limit for split shifts (now 13 1/2 is on the table).
We’ll see, but it’s not just drivers voting. The more senior drivers are the only ones really affected by this specific issue, not dispatchers, maintenance staff and newer drivers. However animosity has really been stoked up so they still might vote “no” regardless.
