Is Parable of the Sower a stand alone book or part of a series? Is it related to Parable of the Talents in any way other than both being named after Christ’s Parables? I just picked PotS up in a used book store, and it’s hard to tell from the book.

Parable of the Sower stands alone, though it is related to Parable of the Talents. They are both set in the same dystopia, though Parable of the Talents is some years later. I don’t remember offhand if any characters appear in both (I believe so, but I can’t say who).
But you don’t need to have read one to understand the other.
Parable of the Talents is the second book in what was to have been a trilogy, I think.
Parable of the Talents is written from the POV of Lauren’s (?) daughter. Butler might well have planned for a third book in the series.
